.
…something that has been instilled in us since childhood …
- Most children were taught from a young age to seek approval from their parents for the things they said or did. Since the need for approval, love and acceptance from our parents is strong, we become conditioned over time to seek approval from others as well. Whenever we don’t receive approval from someone who is not our parent, there is an automatic trigger and desire to win it back. Lauren Suval
.
Often we seek approval from people we don’t even care about
- I was part of that strange race of people aptly described as spending their lives doing things they detest, to make money they don’t want, to buy things they don’t need, to impress people they dislike. Emile Henry Gauvreau

- It is a peculiar sensation, this double-consciousness, this sense of always looking at one’s self through the eyes of others, of measuring one’s soul by the tape of a world that looks on in amused contempt and pity. William Edward Burghardt Du Bois
.
Our need for approval and fear of disapproval stems from our evolutionary need to belong
- Humans share an innate drive to connect with others. We’re evolutionarily wired to crave inclusion. Eons ago, this was linked with our survival; in prehistoric times, rejection triggered fear. If someone became isolated or was ousted from the group, his or her life would be at risk. Because the consequences of being rejected were so extreme, our brains and behavior adapted to avoid disapproval from others. In fact, research has shown that social rejection activates many of the same brain regions involved in physical pain, which helps explains why disapproval stings. Melody Wilding
- The number one need in all people is the need for acceptance, the need to experience a sense of belonging to something and someone. The need for acceptance is more powerful in your family than anywhere else…. If that need is not met by your family, trust me, your kids will go elsewhere to seek it in order to find approval and acceptance. Phil McGraw
.
An excessive need for approval comes from the ego…
- If you want to reach a state of bliss, then go beyond your ego and the internal dialogue. Make a decision to relinquish the need to control, the need to be approved, and the need to judge. Those are the three things the ego is doing all the time. It’s very important to be aware of them every time they come up. Deepak Chopra
- I do not care so much what I am to others as I care what I am to myself. Michel de Montaigne
- Desire for approval and recognition is a healthy motive, but the desire to be acknowledged as better, stronger, or more intelligent than a fellow being or fellow scholar easily leads to an excessively egoistic psychological adjustment, which may become injurious for the individual and for the community. Albert Einstein
- The Ego, however, is not who you really are. The ego is your self-image; it is your social mask; it is the role you are playing. Your social mask thrives on approval. It wants control, and it is sustained by power, because it lives in fear. Deepak Chopra

- Shyness is I-ness. Shyness is really wondering if you have other people’s approval. Dorothy Sarnoff
.
The universal craving for approval is particularly evident in today’s social media and celebrity culture
- In terms of approval, the Internet is a seductive place. Part of this is because the Internet makes approval feel more tangible. No one in real life can like or star or retweet something you say. The best they can do is laugh a little harder, smile a little bigger. Not so with the Internet. The approval you feel is instantly measured by how much a post is shared, liked, favorited, or reposted. The danger of posting something online for me lies in the way I track its reception like a new iPhone about to be delivered to my doorstep: obsessively and compulsively. I want to feel the rush of approval. Sammy Rhodes
- We’re high on the adrenaline of feeling, even though we know it’s fleeting and evanescence. And we’re getting worse — checking texts and emails and Facebook every five minutes, always searching for that next hit of feeling, that next morsel of approval. Deborah Meyler

Did you know that there is a website called Kevo that tracks the approval rating of celebrities? Imagine the stress of perpetually living in fear that the ratings will go down! Rachna Singh
.
Approval seeking is natural in moderation but it becomes a problem when we give up our true selves to find it
- Acceptance is approval, a word with a bad name in some psychologies. Yet it is perfectly normal to seek approval in childhood and throughout life. We require approval from those we respect. The kinship it creates lifts us to their level, a process referred to in self-psychology as transmuting internalization. Approval is a necessary component of self-esteem. It becomes a problem only when we give up our true self to find it. Then approval-seeking works against us. David Richo
- Somewhere in the middle of being driven by what other people think, the tension between the desire for approval and the fear of disapproval, are we missing what we really want? Rachna Singh

The need for approval can make you pretend to be who you are not …
- People striving for approval from others become phony. Ichiro Suzuki

- Being yourself, Integrity, Self-respect
.
… so others end up approving of someone who doesn’t even exist
- How do you react when you think you need people’s love? Do you become a slave for their approval? Do you live an inauthentic life because you can’t bear the thought that they might disapprove of you? Do you try to figure out how they would like you to be, and then try to become that, like a chameleon? In fact, you never really get their love. You turn into someone you aren’t, and then when they say “I love you,” you can’t believe it, because they’re loving a facade. They’re loving someone who doesn’t even exist, the person you’re pretending to be. It’s difficult to seek other people’s love. It’s deadly. In seeking it, you lose what is genuine. This is the prison we create for ourselves as we seek what we already have. Byron Katie
.
The need for approval can drive you to manipulate others
- How do I react when I believe I need your approval? I compliment you when I think I don’t mean it. I exaggerate about my life so you’ll find me attractive or interesting. I say what I think you want to hear. And I agree with you when I don’t agree. I begin to lie in fact. I pretend I’m interested when maybe my mind is 1000 miles away. I smile as though I’m very connected to you. Whatever it takes to manipulate your approval. Whatever facade it takes, I turn into that facade. Byron Katie
.
The need for approval stops you from sharing all of yourself
- Our human condition makes us tend to share only the best of ourselves, because we are always searching for love and approval. Paulo Coelho

.
The need for approval makes you easy to own, control and manipulate
- If you are an approval addict, your behaviour is as easy to control as that of any other junkie. All a manipulator need do is a simple two-step process: Give you what you crave, and then threaten to take it away. Every drug dealer in the world plays this game. Harriet B. Braiker

.
The need for approval requires a constant, exhausting struggle for it can always be taken away
- Living up to someone’s high opinion of you can be very hard work. Anthony Lambert
- To seek approval is to have no resting place, no sanctuary. Like all judgment, approval encourages a constant striving. It makes us uncertain of who we are and of our true value. This is as true of the approval we give ourselves as it is of the approval we offer others. Approval can’t be trusted. It can be withdrawn at any time no matter what our track record has been. It is as nourishing of real growth as cotton candy. Yet many of us spend our lives pursuing it. Rachel Naomi Remen
- Your high opinion of me is your opinion only. Any moment you may change it. Why attach importance to opinions, even your own? Nisargadatta Maharaj
.
The need for approval makes you sacrifice your uniqueness in order to conform
- Man’s desire for the approval of his fellows is so strong, his dread of their censure so violent, that he himself has brought his enemy (conscience) within his gates; and it keeps watch over him, vigilant always in the interests of its master to crush any half-formed desire to break away from the herd. William Somerset Maugham

- The conformist is filled with the need for approval. He can never get enough. He runs from one person to another seeking compliments and endorsements for his behavior and actions. As a child, he turned to parents and teachers; when he started to work, to his boss and fellow workers; in marriage, he turned to his mate. He must always have someone around to pat him on the head and tell him he is doing a good job. This bolsters up his poor self-esteem. Robert Anthony
- Fear, Rejection
.
The need for approval is an impossible attempt to control another’s mind
- You can’t control someone else’s thinking. You can’t even control your own. There’s no one thinking anyway. It’s a house of mirrors. Seeking approval means being stuck in the thought “I’m a this,” this little speck, this limited thing. Byron Katie

Approval can be withdrawn at any time

- Fame is an illusive thing – here today, gone tomorrow. The fickle, shallow mob raises its heroes to the pinnacle of approval today and hurls them into oblivion tomorrow at the slightest whim; cheers today, hisses tomorrow; utter forgetfulness in a few months. Henry Miller
.
Approval seeking is a loss of personal power
- When we consistently suppress and distrust our intuitive knowingness, looking instead for authority, validation, and approval from others, we give our personal power away. Shakti Gawain
- When one is trying to do something beyond his known powers it is useless to seek the approval of friends. Friends are at their best in moments of defeat. Henry Miller
- Here is the thing about the need for approval…. You are not driven by your own goals rather by something that someone else has deemed important. It takes away the power you have over your situation and gives it to someone else. Nicole Sanders
- Don’t seek approval. This may be the toughest suggestion for you to follow — and the most important. Whether you’te a teenager seeking approval from your peers, a middle-aged parent seeking the approval of your kids, or a man or woman seeking the approval of a partner, it all amounts to the same thing. You’re giving your personal power away every time you seek validation from someone else for who you are. Trish MacGregor
- Power
.
To seek approval is to assume you aren’t whole
- When you believe the thought that anyone should love you, that’s where the pain begins. I often say, “If I had a prayer, it would be: ‘God spare me from the desire for love, approval, or appreciation. Amen.” To seek people’s love and approval assumes that you aren’t whole. Byron Katie

- Self-esteem, Self-worth, Whole-heartedness, Completeness
.
…or even what the true source of the approval actually is
- Not all approval is good news and not all disapproval is bad news. Imagine that you meet somebody and you think that he likes you. You wonder why. Then it dawns on you that he is a taker and that he probably likes you because he sees that he can take advantage of you. You realize that he approves of you for a rather unflattering reason. When you think through the meaning of this approval, it feels more like a criticism than a compliment. Well, what if we turn this scenario around: you meet somebody and you think he doesn’t like you. You wonder why. Then it dawns on you: this person is threatened by your intelligence. You realize that his dislike of you is actually an indirect compliment. This disapproval confirms to you something that you do value about yourself. My point? Evaluating yourself solely on the basis of others’ approval or disapproval can be misleading. The mere fact of others’ approval or disapproval of you is meaningless unless you understand and agree with the reasons behind others’ evaluations of you. Pavel Somov
.
There’s nothing personal in praise or approval
- If you base your self-worth on how often people compliment and validate you, then you’re allowing others to decide how you feel about yourself. If someone compliments you, it’s no more personal than a direct insult. They’re simply calling it how they see it, and that may or may not be accurate–only you can be the judge of that. If someone compliments you, that doesn’t make you a better person, it makes them a better person because they’re taking the time to be supportive and encouraging. Your value remains unchanged, because it’s something that comes from within. Levien Neelman
- People will love you. People will hate you. And none of it will have anything to do with you. Abraham Hicks

Letting go of the need for approval opens you up to valuable feedback from others
- When you stop seeking approval, you become a student. You’re open. Byron Katie
- It’s very powerful in life not to have approval because it takes me back to myself. Often when people don’t approve of me, I’ve done something that I don’t approve of either. And I’m always grateful when people wake me up to what is not kind. Any time I live out of a sense of unkindness, then I feel that. It doesn’t feel like balance. Byron Katie

- Whenever you are too worried about someone else’s approval, that person loses respect for you. Sherry Argov

Let go of the need for approval by questioning the thoughts that cause it
- Seeking approval is one of the main way people lose the awareness of it. Seeking is always stressful. It puts your happiness in other people’s hands. When you question the thoughts that cause your seeking, like “My mother doesn’t love me.” or “I should be thinner,” you begin to find your own approval. It just appears. And when you have that awareness, it’s easy to approve of other people. This is the way to be truly happy. We are 100% responsible for our own happiness. This is very good news! Byron Katie

Fill the void in you with self-worth and self-acceptance, not external approval
- The more you surrender to the fear of someone’s disapproval, the more you lose face in your own eyes, and the more desperate you become for someone’s approval. Within you is a void that should have been filled by self- esteem. Let go of the need for approval by being authentically yourself
- Going with the flow and letting it hang out… warts, bumps, lumps and all…. and not taking your thoughts serious about what others think of you all the time… not trying to appear tough, cool and on top of your game.. when you know you aren’t, is the way to go every single time. Not only is the show exhausting, but it puts a wall up between you and the rest of the world and you and your true self. Chris McCombs

.
Let go of the need for approval by transcending the ego
- The ego’s sense of self-worth is in most cases bound up with the worth you have in the eyes of others. You need others to give you a sense of self, and if you live in a culture that to a large extent equates self-worth with how much and what you have, if you cannot look through this collective delusion, you will be condemned to chasing after things for the rest of your life in the vain hope of finding your worth and completion of your sense of self there. Eckhart Tolle

Albert Einstein
.
Quieten the ego by becoming comfortable with not standing out
- If you are content with being nobody in particular, content not to stand out, you align yourself with the power of the universe. - Another aspect of this practice is to refrain from attempting to strengthen the self by showing off, wanting to stand out, be special, make an impression, or demand attention. - Praise and blame are all the same. You’ll never be able to please all the people all the time. Even in a landslide victory in which a candidate secures 55% of the vote, he or she is left with 45% of the population that wishes someone else were the winner. Everyone has their own set of ideas with which to evaluate life and our ideas don’t always match those of other people. The sooner we accept the inevitable dilemma of not being able to win the approval of everyone we meet, the easier our lives will become. Richard Carlson
- Let’s get one fact straight right now: You will never, never, never, ever, ever, ever, ever get everyone’s approval all the time. Jesus didn’t do it, nor did Gandhi or Princess Diana. Even very good people could not get everyone to like them. No one ever has and you won’t be the first. You won’t be able to get everyone to like any one thing you do, and you won’t get any one person to like everything you do. So give up your quest for universal admiration right now; it is never-ending, infinitely frustrating, and it sucks.
