Deepak Chopra (quotes)

The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success

.

The Law of Pure Potentiality

  • Take time to be silent, to just BE. Meditate for 30 minutes twice a day. Silently witness the intelligence within every living thing. Practice non-judgment.
.

The Law of Giving

  • Today, bring whoever you encounter a gift: a compliment or flower. Gratefully receive gifts. Keep wealth circulating by giving and receiving care, affection, appreciation and love.
.

The Law of Karma

  • Every action generates a force of energy that returns to us in like kind. Choosing actions that bring happiness and success to others ensures the flow of happiness and success to you.
.

The Law of Least Effort

  • Accept people, situations, and events as they occur. Take responsibility for your situation and for all events seen as problems. Relinquish the need to defend your point of view.
.

The Law of Intention and Desire

  • Inherent in every intention and desire is the mechanics for its fulfillment. Make a list of desires. Trust that when things don’t seem to go your way, there is a reason.
.

The Law of Detachment

  • Allow yourself and others the freedom to be who they are. Do not force solutions—allow solutions to spontaneously emerge. Uncertainty is essential, and your path to freedom.
.

The Law of Dharma

  • Seek your higher Self. Discover your unique talents. Ask yourself how you are best suited to serve humanity. Using your unique talents and serving others brings unlimited bliss and abundance.
.

Spiritual success defined

.

There are many aspects to success …

  • There are many aspects to success; material wealth is only one component. …But success also includes good health, energy and enthusiasm for life, fulfilling relationships, creative freedom, emotional and psychological stability, a sense of well- being, and peace of mind.
.

Success is the ability to fulfil your desires with ease

  • Success is the ability to fulfil your desires with effortless ease. And yet success, including the creation of wealth, has always been considered to be a process that requires hard work, and it is often considered to be at the expense of others. We need a more spiritual approach to success and affluence, which is the abundant flow of all good things to you. With the knowledge and practice of spiritual law, we put ourselves in harmony with nature and create with carefreeness, joy, and love.
.

Success is the expansion of happiness

  • Success in life could be defined as the continued expansion of happiness and the progressive realization of worthy goals.
.

Success is the experience of the miraculous

  • True success is therefore the experience of the miraculous. It is the unfolding of the divinity within us. It is the perception of divinity wherever we go, in whatever we perceive — in the eyes of a child, in the beauty of a flower, in the flight of a bird.
  • When we begin to experience our life as the miraculous expression of divinity — not occasionally, but all the time — then we will know the true meaning of success.
.

Make time for stillness

.

Make time each day for stillness …

  • But first, you have to practice stillness. Stillness is the first requirement of manifesting your desires, because in stillness lies your connection to the field of pure potentiality that can orchestrate an infinity of details for you.
  • I get in touch with the power of pure potentiality by taking time each day to be silent, to just be.
  • You need not leave your room. Remain sitting at your table and listen. You need not even listen, simply wait. You need not even wait, just learn to be quiet, and still and solitary. The world will freely offer itself to you to be unmasked. It has no choice; it will roll in ecstasy at your feet.
.

… by quietening your mind of thoughts …

  • We have approximately 60,000 thoughts in a day. Unfortunately, 95% of them are thoughts we had the day before.
  • Meditation is not a way of making your mind quiet. It is a way of entering into the quiet that is already there – buried under the 50,000 thoughts the average person thinks every day.
.

… and then carry your stillness with you wherever you go

  • Wherever you go in the midst of movement and activity, carry your stillness within you. Then the chaotic movement around you will never overshadow your access to the reservoir of creativity, the field of pure potentiality.
.

Stillness is a source of clarity, inspiration and insight

  • Inner silence promotes clarity of mind. It makes us value the inner world. It trains us to go inside to the source of peace and inspiration when we are faced with problems and challenges.
  • Silence is the great teacher and to learn its lessons you must pay attention to it. There is no substitute for the creative inspiration, knowledge, and stability that come from knowing how to contact your core of inner silence.
  • There is no substitute for the creative inspiration, knowledge, and stability that come from knowing how to contact your core of inner silence.
  • The cosmic psyche whispers to us softly in the gap between our thoughts. We can learn more about the universe “between our thoughts” than actually “from our thoughts”.
.

Through stillness, become the silent witness

  • We have to learn to go beyond both a positive mind and a negative mind to become a silent, nonjudgmental, nonanalytical, noninterpretive mind. In other words, the silent witness. In the process of silent witnessing, we experience inner silence. In the purity of silence, we feel connected to our source and to everything else.
  • When the mind is quiet, we come to know ourselves as the pure witness.
.

Practices for spiritual success

.

Commune with nature

  • I get in touch with the power of pure potentiality by taking time each day to commune with nature.
  • I will take time each day to commune with nature and to silently witness the intelligence within every living thing. I will sit silently and watch a sunset, or listen to the sound of the ocean or a stream, or simply smell the scent of a flower.
  • Spending time in nature will also give you access to the qualities inherent in the field: infinite creativity, freedom, and bliss.
.

Practice non-judgement

  • I will practice non-judgement. Today I shall judge nothing that occurs.
  • If you want to reach a state of bliss, make a decision to relinquish the need to control, the need to be approved of and the need to judge.
  • Non-judgement creates silence in your mind. Judgment is the constant evaluation of things as right or wrong, good or bad. When you are constantly evaluating, classifying, labeling, analyzing, you create a lot of turbulence in your internal dialogue. This turbulence constricts the flow of energy between you and the field of pure potentiality. You literally squeeze the “gap” between thoughts. When you squeeze the gap, you squeeze your connection to the field of pure potentiality and infinite creativity.
  • Non-judgment quiets the internal dialogue, and this opens once again the doorway to creativity.
  • When you learn not to judge, you are basically saying, “I am willing to let anything in without deciding first whether it is good or bad.” In the practice of openness, you will be inviting your soul to be intimate with you.
.

Allow people and things to be as they are

  • I allow myself and those around me the freedom to be as they are. I do not rigidly apply my idea of how things should be. I do not force solutions on problems.
  • We empower others by allowing them to be themselves. This means we react to people without preconditions and preconceptions. We accept people for who they are and do not force them to conform to our needs and expectations. In doing so, we empower others to express their full potential as well.
.

Remain open to all points of view

  • I let go of my need to convince others of my point of view. When I remain open to all points of view, my dreams and desires will flow with nature’s desires.
  • Today my awareness will remain established in Defencelessness. I will relinquish the need to defend my point of view. I will feel no need to convince or persuade others to accept my point of view. I will remain open to all points of view.
  •   When you remain open to all points of view—not rigidly attached to only one—your dreams and desires will flow with nature’s desires… you can be sure when the season is right, your desires will manifest.
.

Embrace uncertainty for it is the fertile field of possibility

  • The search for certainty and security is an attachment to the known. The known is the past. There is no evolution in that. Uncertainty on the other hand is the fertile ground of pure creativity and freedom. I relinquish my attachment to the known and step into the field of all possibilities.
  • Today I will factor in uncertainty as an essential ingredient of my experience. In my willingness to accept uncertainty, solutions will spontaneously emerge out of the problem, out of the confusion, disorder, and chaos. The more uncertain things seem to be, the more secure I will feel, because uncertainty is my path to freedom. Through the wisdom of uncertainty, I will find my security.
  • Uncertainty is the fertile field of all possibility.
  • Uncertainty, on the other hand, is the fertile ground of pure creativity and freedom. Uncertainty means stepping into the unknown in every moment of our existence. The unknown is the field of all possibilities, ever fresh, ever new, always open to the creation of new manifestations. Without uncertainty and the unknown, life is just the stale repetition of outworn memories.
.

Embrace the unknown

  • In your willingness to step into the unknown, you will have the wisdom of uncertainty factored in. This means that in every moment of your life, you will have excitement, adventure, mystery. You will experience the fun of life — the magic, the celebration, the exhilaration, and the exultation of your own spirit.
.

Embrace relaxation and calmness

  • Relaxation is the prerequisite for that inner expansion that allows a person to express the source of inspiration and joy within.
.

Embrace both your light and dark sides

  • The most enlightened people in the world embrace their full potential of light and dark. When you’re with people who recognize and own their negative qualities, you never feel judged by them. It’s only when people see good and bad, right and wrong, as qualities outside themselves that judgments occur.
.

Embrace the present moment

  • As you embrace the present and become one with it, and merge with it, you will experience a fire, a glow, a sparkle of ecstasy throbbing in every sentient being. As you begin to experience this exultation of spirit in everything that is alive, as you become intimate with it, joy will be born within you, and you will drop the terrible burdens of defensiveness, resentment, and hurtfulness… then you will become light-hearted, carefree, joyous, and free.
  • I embrace the present and become one with it. I fully experience it.
  • The present moment is the still point around which the universe arises and subsides, only to be reborn again, fresh as a new born child.
  • This is a precious moment, but it is transient. It is a little parenthesis in eternity. If we share with caring, light-heartedness, and love, we will create abundance and joy for each other. And then this moment will have been worthwhile.
.

Appreciate the perfection of this very moment

  • I know that this moment is as it should be because the whole universe is as it should be.
  • This moment — the one you’re experiencing right now — is the culmination of all the moments you have experienced in the past. This moment is as it is because the entire universe is as it is.
  • “Don’t you realize,” Merlin said to his pupil, “that the history of the universe has brought us here to this second?”
  • Whatever relationships I have attracted into my life at this moment are precisely the ones I need in my life at this moment.
.

Accept this moment exactly as it is …

  • I never blame anyone or anything for my situation, including myself. Having accepted this circumstance, I am able to have a creative response to the situation as it is now.
  • I will practice Acceptance. Today I will accept people, situations, circumstances, and events as they occur. I will know that this moment is as it should be, because the whole universe is as it should be. I will not struggle against the whole universe by struggling against this moment. My acceptance is total and complete. I accept things as they are this moment, not as I wish they were.
  • This means that your acceptance of this moment is total and complete. You accept things as they are, not as you wish they were in this moment. This is important to understand. You can wish for things in the future to be different, but in this moment you have to accept things as they are.
  • What is, is simply what is. Allow it and rejoice in it.
  • You can wish for things in the future to be different, but in this moment, you have to accept things as they are.
  • You must accept the present as is. Accept the present and intend the future. The future is something you can always create through detached intention, but you should never struggle against the present.
.

… without resisting it in any way

  • Life is safe; flowing with the current of being is the simplest way to live. Resistance never really succeeds. Controlling the flow of life is impossible.
  • When you struggle against this moment, you’re actually struggling against the entire universe.
.

Harness the power of giving

  • Giving connects two people, the giver and the receiver, and this connection gives birth to a new sense of belonging.
  • Practicing the Law of Giving is actually very simple; if you want joy, give joy to others; if you want love, learn to give love; if you want attention and appreciation, learn to give attention and appreciation; if you want material affluence, help others to become materially affluent. In fact, the easiest way to get what you want is to help others get what they want.
  • The more you give, the more you receive because you keep the abundance of the universe circulating in your life.
  • The universe operates through dynamic exchange… giving and receiving are different aspects of the flow of energy in the universe. and in our willingness to give that which we seek, we keep the abundance of the universe circulating in our lives.
  • Wherever I go, and whoever I encounter, I will bring them a gift. The gift may be a compliment, a flower, or a prayer. Today I will gratefully receive all the gifts that life has to offer me. The gifts of nature, sunlight and the sounds of birds singing.
.

Be the source of what you want

  • Be the source. If you want joy, give joy to others. If you want love, learn to give love. The easiest way to get what you want is to help others get what they want.
  • If you want to be blessed with all the good things in life, learn to silently bless everyone with all the good things in life.
.

Discover your soul’s purest desire

  • It would be helpful if the universe would give us one big clue, or a giant compass, if you will, pointing to the direction we should be taking. In fact, the compass is there. To find it, you need only look inside yourself to discover your soul’s purest desire, its dream for your life.
  • Desire is what leads you through life until the time comes when you desire a higher life. So do not be ashamed that you want so much, yet at the same time do not fool yourself into thinking that what you want today will be enough tomorrow.
  • Just as a small matchstick can set a huge forest on fire, so does a desire light up the fires of manifestation.
.

The power of intention

.

Harness the power of intention

  • Everything that happens in the universe starts with intention. Intention is the very basis of creation.
  • Imagine for a moment your own version of a perfect future. See yourself in that future with everything you could wish for at this very moment fulfilled. Now take the memory of that future and bring it here into the present. Let it influence how you will behave from this moment on.
  • Intention orchestrates infinite possibilities. You might wonder what kind of intent is ideal. What would you ask if your intention could be fulfilled right now?
  • Intentions compressed into words enfold magical power.
  • Learn to harness the power of intention, and you can create anything you desire.
  • One-pointed intention is that quality of attention that is unbending in its fixity of purpose. One- pointed intention means holding your attention to the intended outcome with such unbending purpose that you absolutely refuse to allow obstacles to consume and dissipate the focused quality of your attention. There is a total and complete exclusion of all obstacles from your consciousness. You are able to maintain an unshakable serenity while being committed to your goal with intense passion. This is the power of detached awareness and one-pointed, focused intention simultaneously.
  • Practice clarity of vision. What do you want to create? Ask yourself what you really want, why you really want it, and if manifesting it will serve a higher purpose for humanity.
  • Take five minutes every day and just sit in silence. In that time, put these questions to your attention and heart: ‘Who am I? What do I want for my life? What do I want from my life today?’ Then let go, and let your stream of consciousness, your quieter inner voice, supply the answers. Then, after five minutes, write them down. Do this every day and you’ll be surprised at how situations, circumstances, events, and people will orchestrate themselves around the answers. This is the beginning of synchrodestiny.
.

… then trust the universe to handle the details

  • Let the universe handle the details. Your intentions and desires, when released in the gap, have infinite organizing power. Trust that infinite organizing power of intention to orchestrate all the details for you.
.

Follow this daily ritual to deepen your intention

  • I will make a list of all my desires. I will carry this list with me wherever I go. I will look at this list before I go into my silence and meditation. I will look at it before I go to sleep at night. I will look at it when I wake up in the morning.
  • I will release this list of my desires and surrender it to the womb of creation, trusting that when things don’t seem to go my way, there is a reason, and that the cosmic plan has designs for me much grander than even those that I have conceived.
  • I will remind myself to practice present-moment awareness in all my actions. I will refuse to allow obstacles to consume and dissipate the quality of my attention in the present moment. I will accept the present as it is, and manifest the future through my deepest, most cherished intentions and desires.
.

Have intentions but let go of your attachment to outcome

  • Desire and intent are different. Desire has attachment. Intent does not. It’s imperative that we harness the power of our pure intention— independent of the outcomes of our actions.
  • I am unattached to outcome. I am comfortable in the realm of uncertainty. I do not anticipate or resist, I allow.
  • Intention combined with detachment leads to life centred, present-moment awareness. My intent is for the future, but my attention is in the present. I accept the present and intend the future. I let go of my attachment to outcome. I enjoy every moment in the journey of life.
  • Relinquish your attachment to the outcome. This means giving up your rigid attachment to a specific result and living in the wisdom of uncertainty. It means enjoying every moment in the journey of your life, even if you don’t know the outcome.
  • The Law of Detachment says that in order to acquire anything in the physical universe, you have to relinquish your attachment to it. This doesn’t mean that you give up the intention to create your desire. You don’t give up the intention, and you don’t give up the desire. You give up your attachment to the result.
  • The moment you relinquish your attachment to the result, combining one-pointed intention with detachment at the same time, you will have that which you desire.
  • When things don’t seem to go my way, I let go of my attachment to how I think they should be, trusting that I am not seeing the big picture. If I knew the big picture, I would understand that there is a reason for things unfolding the way they are, and that the cosmos has a plan for me much grander than anything I have conceived.
.

Combine talent and service

.

Create a purpose in life that combines your talent with service to others

  • According to the law of Dharma you have a unique talent and a unique way of expressing it. There is something that you can do better than anyone else in the whole world – and for every unique talent and unique expression of that talent, there are also unique needs. When these needs are matched with the creative expression of your talent, that is the spark that creates affluence. Expressing your talents to fulfill needs creates unlimited wealth and abundance.
  • Everyone has a purpose in life … a unique gift or special talent to give to others. And when we blend this unique talent with service to others, we experience the ecstasy and exultation of our own spirit, which is the ultimate goal of all goals.
  • Find your unique talent, serve humanity with it, and you can generate all the wealth that you want. When your creative expressions match the needs of your fellow humans, then wealth will spontaneously flow from the unmanifest into the manifest, from the realm of the spirit to the world of form.
  • To have passion, to have a dream, to have a purpose in life. And there are three components to that purpose, one is to find out who you really are, to discover God, the second is to serve other human beings, because we are here to do that and the third is to express your unique talents and when you are expressing your unique talents you lose track of time.
  • When you combine the ability to express your unique talent with service to humanity, then you make full use of The Law of Dharma.
  • You have a talent that is unique in its expression, so unique that there’s no one else alive on this planet that has that talent, or that expression of that talent. This means that there’s one thing you can do, and one way of doing it, that is better than anyone else on this entire planet.
  • You will begin to see your life as an opportunity to share the special gift you alone can bestow upon the world.
  • I will make a list of my unique talents. Then I will list all the things that I love to do while expressing my unique talents. When I express my unique talents and use them in the service of humanity, I lose track of time and create abundance in my life as well as in the lives of others. I will ask myself daily, “How can I serve?” and “How can I help?” The answers to these questions will allow me to help and serve my fellow human beings with love.
.

Money is energy that flows when your creative expression matches the needs of others

  • Money is life energy that we exchange and use as a result of the service we provide to the universe.
  • When your creative expressions match the needs of your fellow humans, then wealth will spontaneously flow from the unmanifest into the manifest, from the realm of the spirit to the world of form.
  • … for every unique talent and unique expression of that talent, there are also unique needs. When these needs are matched with the creative expression of your talent, that is the spark that creates affluence. Expressing your talents to fulfill needs creates unlimited wealth and abundance.
.

Allow wealth to circulate in your life

  • If we stop the circulation of money — if our only intention is to hold on to our money and hoard it — since it is life energy, we will stop its circulation back into our lives as well. In order to keep that energy coming to us, we have to keep the energy circulating. Like a river, money must keep flowing, otherwise it begins to stagnate, to clog, to suffocate and strangle its very own life force. Circulation keeps it alive and vital.
.

Let go

.

Learn to let go

  • Holding on to anything is like holding on to your breath. You will suffocate. The only way to get anything in the physical universe is by letting go of it. Let go and it will be yours forever.
.

Let go of the need to control everything

  • If you want to reach a state of bliss, make a decision to relinquish the need to control, the need to be approved of and the need to judge.
.

Let go of your attachment to the opinion and approval of others

  • I am totally independent of the good or bad opinion of others.
  • If you want to reach a state of bliss, make a decision to relinquish the need to control, the need to be approved of and the need to judge.
  • If you’re really spiritual, then you should be totally independent of the good and the bad opinions of the world… you should have faith in yourself.
  • What other people think of you is not your business.  If you start to make that business your business, you will be offended for the rest of your life.
.

Let go of your sense of self importance

  • Most of our energy goes into maintaining our own importance. If we were capable of losing some of that importance, two extraordinary things would happen to us. One, we would free ourselves from trying to maintain the illusory idea of our grandeur; and two, we would provide ourselves with enough energy to catch a glimpse of the actual grandeur of the universe.
.

Trust

.

Appreciate the divine order of the universe …

  • At any given time, the universe is giving you the best result possible.
  • The universe has much bigger plans for you than you ever dreamed of for yourself.
  • There are no extra pieces in the universe. Everyone is here because he or she has a place to fill and every piece must fit itself into the big jigsaw puzzle.
.

… and trust your life is unfolding according to a perfect cosmic plan

  • Situations seem to happen to people, but in reality, they unfold from deeper karmic causes. The universe unfolds to itself, bringing to bear any cause that needs to be included. Don’t take this process personally. The working out of cause and effect is eternal. You are part of this rising and falling that never ends, and only by riding the wave can you ensure that the waves don’t drown you. The ego takes everything personally, leaving no room for higher guidance or purpose. If you can, realize that a cosmic plan is unfolding and appreciate the incredibly woven tapestry for what it is, a design of unparalleled marvel.
  • There are no accidents… there is only some purpose that we haven’t yet understood.
  • Even when you think you have your life all mapped out, things happen that shape your destiny in ways you might never have imagined.
  • This is the ultimate truth of synchrodestiny—that the sum total of the universe is conspiring to create your personal destiny… We cannot even imagine the complex forces behind every event that occurs in our lives. There’s a conspiracy of coincidences that weave the web of karma or destiny and creates an individual’s personal life.
  • When you live your life with an appreciation of coincidences and their meanings, you connect with the underlying field of infinite possibilities.
  • When things don’t seem to go my way, I let go of my attachment to how I think they should be, trusting that I am not seeing the big picture. If I knew the big picture, I would understand that there is a reason for things unfolding the way they are, and that the cosmos has a plan for me much grander than anything I have conceived.
.

Solving problems

.

See every problem as an opportunity in disguise

  • Every single problem that you have in your life is the seed of an opportunity for some greater benefit. Once you have that perception, you open up to a whole range of possibilities — and this keeps the mystery, the wonder, the excitement, the adventure alive.
  • I also know that every problem is an opportunity in disguise, and this alertness to opportunities allows me to take this moment and transform it into a greater benefit.
.

Accept each problem and take responsibility

  • Having accepted things as they are, I will take responsibility for my situation and for all those events I see as problems. Responsibility means not blaming anyone or anything for your situation, including yourself.
  • Having accepted this circumstance, this event, this problem, responsibility then means the ability to have a creative response to the situation as it is now. All problems contain the seeds of opportunity, and this awareness allows you to take the moment and transform it to a better situation or thing.
  • I never blame anyone or anything for my situation, including myself. Having accepted this circumstance, I am able to have a creative response to the situation as it is now.
  • I will not force solutions on problems, thereby creating new problems.
.

Let the power of stillness help you to find a solution to your problems

  • Inner silence promotes clarity of mind. It makes us value the inner world. It trains us to go inside to the source of peace and inspiration when we are faced with problems and challenges.
.

Realising your true nature

.

Realise that you are a God in embryo

  • Every person is a God in embryo. Its only desire is to be born.
  • Human beings are made of body, mind and spirit. Of these, spirit is primary, for it connects us to the source of everything, the eternal field of consciousness.
  • In reality, we are divinity in disguise, and the gods and goddesses in embryo that are contained within us seek to be fully materialised. True success is therefore the experience of the miraculous. It is the unfolding of the divinity within us. It is the perception of divinity wherever we go, in whatever we perceive.

.

In essence, you are pure consciousness

  • We are the universe pretending to be individuals.
  • We live as ripples of energy in the vast ocean of energy.
  • You are consciousness itself, both as it manifests in the material world, and as it lies in unmanifested in your being.
.

Your purpose in life is to awaken to your essential nature; your higher self

  • Each of us is here to discover our higher self or our spiritual self. We must find out for ourself that inside us is a god or goddess in embryo that wants to be born so that we can express our divinity.
  • Each of us is here to discover our true Self that essentially we are spiritual beings who have taken manifestation in physical form… that we‘re not human beings that have occasional spiritual experiences… that we’re spiritual beings that have occasional human experiences.
  • I lovingly nurture the god in embryo that lies deep within my soul. I awaken myself to the deep stillness that lies deep within my heart.
  • Know that you have a centre. Know that you belong there. Know that the path to the centre takes no effort.
  • Life is a cosmic game of hide and seek in which we lose ourselves to find ourselves.
  • Whatever mistake you have made about who you are is temporary.  Your true identity has remained untouched.  You have never sinned against it or affected it in any way except to lose touch with it.
.

Your essential nature is pure love, joy and peace

  • Our essential nature is pure potentiality, infinite creativity, pure joy, pure knowledge, infinite silence, perfect balance, simplicity and bliss.
  • You must learn to get in touch with the innermost essence of your being. This true essence is beyond the ego. It is fearless; it is free; it is immune to criticism; it does not fear any challenge. It is beneath no one, superior to no one, and full of magic, mystery, and enchantment.
  • Your true Self, which is your spirit, is immune to criticism, it is unfearful of any challenge, and it feels beneath no one. And yet, it is also humble and feels superior to no one, because it recognises that everyone else is the same Self, the same spirit in different disguises.
.

Getting in touch with your higher self brings beautiful rewards

  • When we are in touch with our universal Self, we are immune to criticism, but responsive to feedback. This means that on the emotional, psychological, and spiritual levels, we feel neither beneath nor superior to anyone else. This doesn’t mean we are arrogant or cocky, but a quiet confidence and dignity radiate from us that result in a fearlessness and readiness to creatively take on any challenge. It also means we are never the victim of self- importance, knowing that all self- importance is a form of self- pity in disguise.
  • When we are in touch with our universal Self, we empower others by allowing them to be themselves. This means we react to people without preconditions and preconceptions. We accept people for who they are and do not force them to conform to our needs and expectations. In doing so, we empower others to express their full potential as well.
  • When we are in touch with our universal Self, We relinquish the need for approval and control. This means that our actions are independent of the opinions of others and detached from expectations. We are motivated by our own powerful instincts and their evolutionary outcome, not because we have any expectations for payback.
  • When you discover your essential nature, and know who you really are, in that knowing itself is the ability to fulfill any dream you have… and the more you experience your true nature, the closer you are to the field of pure potentiality.
  • When you experience the power of the Self, there is an absence of fear, there is no compulsion to control, and no struggle for approval or external power… Your true Self, which is your spirit, your soul, is completely free of those things. It is immune to criticism, it is unfearful of any challenge, and it feels beneath no one.
  • There are only two symptoms of enlightenment, just two indications that a transformation is taking place within you toward a higher consciousness. The first symptom is that you stop worrying. Things don’t bother you anymore. You become light- hearted and full of joy. The second symptom is that you encounter more and more meaningful coincidences in your life, more and more synchronicities. And this accelerates to the point where you actually experience the miraculous.
.

Transcending the ego

.

Standing between you and your higher self is your ego – your false image of who you are

  • The Ego is not who you really are. The ego is your self-image; it is your social mask; it is the role you are playing. Your social mask thrives on approval. It wants control, and it is sustained by power, because it lives in fear.
  • The ego is your self-image; it is your social mask; it is the role you are playing. Your social mask thrives on approval. It wants control, and it is sustained by power, because it lives in fear.
.

Understand the difference between your higher self and the ego

  • The true self is certain and clear about things. The everyday self gets influenced by countless outside influences, leading to confusion. 2. The true self is stable. The everyday self shifts constantly. 3. The true self is driven by a deep sense of truth. The everyday self is driven by the ego, the unending demands of “I, me, mine.” 4. The true self is at peace. The everyday self is easily agitated and disturbed. 5. The true self is love. The everyday self, lacking love, seeks it from outside sources.
  • My internal reference point is my spirit which is love. In object referral, we are seeking approval of others and need to control things. Our behaviour is in anticipation of a response, therefore fear based. Ego based power lasts only as long as the object of reference is there. As soon as the money, power, title, job goes away, so does the power. In self-referral, my self is immune to criticism, unfearful of a challenge, feels beneath no-one, yet feels superior to no- one because it recognises that everyone is the same spirit.
.

The ego sustains itself through fear, control and grasping for approval

  • In object- referral we also feel an intense need to control things. We feel an intense need for external power. The need for to control things, and the need for external power are needs that are based on fear.
  • In object-referral we are constantly seeking the approval of others. Our thinking and our behavior are always in anticipation of a response. It is therefore fear-based.
  • The ego relies on the familiar. It is reluctant to experience the unknown, which is the very essence of life.
  • There is no holy life. There is no war between good and evil. There is no sin and no redemption. None of these things matter to the real you. But they all matter hugely to the false you, the one who believes in the separate self. You have tried to take your separate self, with all its loneliness and anxiety and pride, to the door of enlightenment. But it will never go through, because it is a ghost.
  • When your internal reference point is the ego, when you seek power and control over other people or seek approval from others, you spend energy in a wasteful way.
  • Attention to my ego (when I seek power and control over others or seek approval from others) consumes the greatest amount of energy.
  • Fighting your ego is a melodrama of the ego.
.

The spiritual path is one of relinquishing the ego and awakening to who you really are

  • If you want to reach a state of bliss, then go beyond your ego and the internal dialogue. Make a decision to relinquish the need to control, the need to be approved, and the need to judge. Those are the three things the ego is doing all the time. It’s very important to be aware of them every time they come up.
.

Spirituality is not about dogma but about awareness

  • Enlightened leadership is spiritual if we understand spirituality not as some kind of religious dogma or ideology but as the domain of awareness where we experience values like truth, goodness, beauty, love and compassion, and also intuition, creativity, insight and focused attention.
.

Love

.

Realise that love is who you are

  • Remember, in our inmost being, we are all completely lovable because spirit is love. Beyond what anyone can make you think or feel about yourself, your unconditioned spirit stands, shining with a love nothing can tarnish.
  • In our imaginations, we believe that love is apart from us. Actually, there is nothing but love, once we are ready to accept it. When you truly find love, you find yourself.
  • The Universe contains three things that cannot be destroyed; Being, Awareness and Love.
.

Realise the spiritual power of love

  • Surrender is faith that the power of Love can accomplish anything even when you cannot foresee the outcome.
  • On the path to love, impossibilities are resolved by turning non-love into love. With spiritual growth comes new creative potential, leading to the realization that you are pure potential, able to fill any creative impulse.
  • Least effort is expended when my motivations are motivated by love, because nature is held together by love. When my actions are motivated by love, my energy multiplies and accumulates. Attention to my ego (when I seek power and control over others or seek approval from others) consumes the greatest amount of energy. When my internal reference point is my spirit, when I am immune from criticism and unafraid of any challenge, I harness the power of love.
.

Let love motivate your every action

  • When your actions are motivated by love, your energy multiplies and accumulates — and the surplus energy you gather and enjoy can be channeled to create anything that you want, including unlimited wealth.
  • The less you open your heart to others, the more your heart suffers.
  • The secret of attraction is to love yourself. Attractive people judge neither themselves nor others. They are open to gestures of love. They think about love, and express their love in every action. They know that love is not a mere sentiment, but the ultimate truth at the heart of the universe.
.

Choice

.

Appreciate the power of choice

  • When you make a choice, you change the future.
  • You and I are essentially infinite choice-makers. In every moment of our existence, we are in that field of all possibilities where we have access to an infinity of choices.
.

Realise there is no such thing as a wrong decision

  • If you obsess over whether you are making the right decision, you are basically assuming that the universe will reward you for one thing and punish you for another. The universe has no fixed agenda. Once you make any decision, it works around that decision. There is no right or wrong, only a series of possibilities that shift with each thought, feeling, and action that you experience.
  • No single decision you ever made has led in a straight line to where you find yourself now. You peeked down some roads and took a few steps before turning back. You followed some roads that came to a dead end and others that got lost at too many intersections. Ultimately, all roads are connected to all other roads.
.

Ask yourself these questions when making a choice

  • Whenever I make a choice, I will ask myself two questions: “What are the consequences of this choice that I’m making?” and “Will this choice bring fulfillment and happiness to me and also to those who are affected by this choice?” I will then ask my heart for guidance and be guided by its message of comfort or discomfort. If the choice feels comfortable, I will plunge ahead with abandon. If the choice feels uncomfortable, I will pause and see the consequences of my action with my inner vision. This guidance will enable me to make spontaneously correct choices for myself and for all those around me.
  • Today I will witness the choices I make in each moment. When I make a choice, I will ask myself two questions: What are the consequences? Will it bring happiness and fulfillment to me and those effected by this decision? Then I will ask my heart for guidance and be guided by its feeling of comfort or discomfort.

Appreciate the subjective nature of your perceptions

  • A verse from the Veda says, ‘What you see, you become.’ In other words, just the experience of perceiving the world makes you what you are. This is a quite literal statement.
  • Every one of the five senses can be twisted to deliver a completely different picture of the world. If by picture we mean sight, sound , smell, taste and texture of things, a troubling conclusion looms. Apart from the very unreliable picture running inside the brain, we have no proof that reality is anything like what we see.
  • For nearly one hundred years we have known that the material world is an illusion. Everything that seems solid –  a rock, a tree, your body – is actually 99.999% empty space.
.

See the world as if for the first time

  • I will see one thing today as if for the first time. Today I give myself permission to apply new feelings of appreciation to a flower, a curtain fluttering in the breeze, a child’s game, a tree gracing the roadside – anything I have taken for granted which calls out to be seen anew.
  • See the world as if for the first time; see it through the eyes of a child, and you will suddenly find that you are free.
.

Realise the amazing power of the body to heal and revitalise itself

  • We have a pharmacy inside us that is absolutely exquisite. It makes the right medicine, for the precise time, for the right target organ—with no side effects.
  • Most people think that aging is irreversible and we know that there are mechanisms even in the human machinery that allow for the reversal of aging, through correction of diet, through anti- oxidants, through removal of toxins from the body, through exercise, through yoga and breathing techniques, and through meditation.
  • The way you think, the way you behave, the way you eat, can influence your life by 30 to 50 years.
  • If we are creating ourselves all the time, then it is never too late to begin creating the bodies we want instead of the ones we mistakenly assume we are stuck with.
.

Boost your health through love and compassion

  • To live without love, compassion, or any other spiritual value creates a state of such severe imbalance that every cell yearns to correct it. Ultimately, that is what lies behind the onset of disease; the body is sending a message that something lacking in the present—an imbalance existing somewhere—has given rise to highly visible, unarguable, physical symptoms.
  • Life is like a tree and its root is consciousness. Therefore, once we tend the root, the tree as a whole will be healthy.
.

Learn to listen to your body

  • What can you do to start listening to your body? The most basic elements are as follows: Feel what you feel. Don’t talk yourself into denial. Accept what you feel. Don’t judge what’s actually there. Be open to your body. It’s always speaking. Be willing to listen. Trust your body. Every cell is on your side, which means you have hundreds of billions of allies.
  • In order to trust your body as a guide, the first step is to begin to understand it.
.

Learn to listen to your heart and intuition

  • Only the heart knows the correct answer. Most people think the heart is mushy and sentimental. But it’s not. The heart is intuitive; it’s holistic, it’s contextual, it’s relational. It doesn’t have a win- lose orientation. It taps into the cosmic computer – the field of pure potentiality, pure knowledge, and infinite organizing power –  and takes everything into account. At times it may not even seem rational, but the heart has a computing ability that is far more accurate and far more precise than anything within the limits of rational thought.
.

Open yourself to joy

  • Joy is a return to the deep harmony of body, mind, and spirit that was yours at birth and that can be yours again. That openness to love, that capacity for wholeness with the world around you, is still within you.
  • The healthiest response to life is joy.
.

Life is an act of creation

  • The most creative act you will ever undertake is the act of creating yourself.
  • Where nature goes to create stars, galaxies, quarks and leptons, you and I also go to create ourselves.
.

Appreciate the fleetingness of life

  • We are travellers in a cosmic journey – star dust, swirling and dancing in the eddies and whirlpools of infinity. Life is eternal. But the expressions of life are ephemeral, momentary, transient. Buddha once said “This existence of ours is as transient as autumn clouds. To watch the birth and death of beings is like looking at the movements of a dance. A lifetime is like a flash of lightning in the sky.” We have stopped for a moment to encounter each other, to meet, to love, to share. This is a precious moment, but it is transient. It is a little parenthesis in eternity. If we share with caring, light heartedness and love, we will create abundance and joy for each other. And then this moment will have been worthwhile.
.

Thoughts on happiness

  • Be happy for no reason, like a child. If you are happy for a reason, you’re in trouble, because that reason can be taken from you.
  • Happiness is a continuation of happenings which are not resisted.
  • In spiritual terms, success is the expansion of happiness.
  • Just as light brightens darkness, discovering inner fulfillment can eliminate any disorder or discomfort. This is truly the key to creating balance and harmony in everything you do.
  • The most satisfying project you will ever undertake–and a mark of a complete human being– is to discover how to build a sense of happiness that no one can take away from you.
  • Why are we here?  We exist not to pursue happiness, which is fleeting, or outer accomplishment, which can always be bettered. We are here to nourish the self.
.

Thoughts on wisdom

  • The next step in man’s evolution will be the survival of the wisest.
  • The essence of wisdom is to see that there is always a solution once you realize that the mind, which seems to create so much suffering, has infinite potential to create fulfillment instead.
.

Thoughts on anger and fear

  • Fear, anger, stubbornness, and distrust portray themselves as your rescuers. Actually, these energies only make you more closed off. Tell yourself: Nobody ever solved a situation by panicking; no one ever solved a situation by refusing to hear new answers; no one solved a situation by shutting down…
  • Be patient with fear and anger.  But don’t indulge them.
  • Aggression and violence are the shadow energies of fear and impotence.
  • If you try to get rid of fear and anger without knowing their meaning, they will grow stronger and return.
.

Thoughts on sex

  • Sex is a means of escaping our little self or ego. It is many peoples’ only experience of meditation.
  • Sex is always about emotions. Good sex is about free emotions; bad sex is about blocked emotions.
  • Sexual fulfilment occurs when the experience comes from playfulness instead of need. Frequently people bring their conflicts and needs into the sexual experience. When sex is used to fulfil needs, it leads to addiction. When sex comes from playfulness, the result is ecstasy.

More thoughts from Deepak Chopra

  • Looking for yourself is like a thirsty fish looking for water.
  • All great changes are preceded by chaos.
  • At this moment, you are seamlessly flowing with the cosmos. There is no difference between your breathing and the breathing of the rain forest, between your bloodstream and the world’s rivers, between your bones and the chalk cliffs of Dover.
  • Creativity is not an impulse, but a process.
  • Each of us is a unique strand in the intricate web of life and here to make a contribution.
  • Every time you are tempted to react in the same old way, ask if you want to be a prisoner of the past or a pioneer of the future.
  • Everything that happens to us is a reflection of who we are.
  • For everyone, well-being is a journey. The secret is committing to that journey and taking those first steps with hope and belief in yourself.
  • Good luck is opportunity meeting preparedness.
  • I use memories, but I will not allow memories to use me.
  • In every failure lies the seeds of success.

  • Molecules dissolve and pass away, but consciousness survives the death of the matter on which it rides.
  • Religion is a tool to bind people together, to strengthen their unity, but like every tool, it can be mismanaged, even used in opposition to the way it should.
  • The inward journey is about finding your own fullness, something that no one else can take away.
  • The meaning that you give an event is the event.
  • Walk with those seeking truth… run from those who think they’ve found it.
  • What keeps life fascinating is the constant creativity of the soul.
  • What you pay attention to grows. If your attention is attracted to negative situations and emotions, then they will grow in your awareness.
  • When you dig a well, there’s no sign of water until you reach it, only rocks and dirt to move out of the way. You have removed enough; soon the pure water will flow, said Buddha.
  • When you struggle with your partner, you are struggling with yourself. Every fault you see in them touches a denied weakness in yourself.
  • Who am I? is the only question worth asking and the only one never answered.
  • With spiritual growth comes new creative potential, leading to the realization that you are pure potential, able to fill any creative impulse.
.

Questions

  • If money was no concern and you had all the time and money in the world, what would you do?
  • If you knew you could have it all and do anything you wanted, what would you choose to have and what would you choose to do?
