Awareness (consciousness) is the true experiencer of all we experience (summary)
In my direct experience in this moment, what do I know with absolute certainty to be true and real?
Firstly, in this moment, I know I exist. In other words, I know “I am”. How? Because I am aware of being aware.
Secondly in this moment, I know “I am experiencing something”. How? Because thoughts, feelings, sensations and perceptions are arising in my awareness.
Life is a stream of experiences arising in my awareness and may not be real. It could all be a dream. But even if it is, I know with absolute certainty that “I am” and that “I am experiencing”.
So who am? Who is it that is experiencing my experiences?
- Is it my memories? No, memories cannot be aware. I am that which is aware of memories coming and going.
- Am I my mind? No, the mind is but thoughts arising and thoughts cannot be aware. I am that which is aware of thoughts coming and going.
- Am I my emotions. No, emotions cannot be aware. I am that which is aware of emotions coming and going.
- Am I my body? No, bodily sensations and perceptions cannot be aware. I am that which is aware of bodily sensations and perceptions coming and going.
What remains when memories, thoughts, emotions and bodily sensations disappear? I simply am aware of being aware.
So, what is it in me then that is aware of being aware and aware of experiences coming and going? Awareness itself. Consciousness itself.
The experiencer of all I experience is Awareness. Awareness I am. Awareness I am experiencing.
