John Ortberg
- After a hard day scrambling to find your way around in the world, it’s assuring to come home to a place you know. God can be equally familiar to you. With time you can learn where to go for nourishment, where to hide for protection , where to turn for guidance. Just as your earthly house is a place of refuge, so God’s house is a place of peace. Max Lucado
- In scripture we are told of some trusting in God and others trusting in idols, and that God is our refuge, our strength, our defense. In the same sense the Gods of the King who shall do according to his will are called Mahuzzims, munitions, fortresses, protectors, guardians, or defenders. Isaac Newton
- In the secret of God’s tabernacle no enemy can find us, and no troubles can reach us. The pride of man and the strife of tongues find no entrance into the pavilion of God. The secret of his presence is a more secure refuge than a thousand Gibraltars. I do not mean that no trials come. They may come in abundance, but they cannot penetrate into the sanctuary of the soul, and we may dwell in perfect peace even in the midst of life fiercest storms. Hannah Whitall Smith
- I love to say that not only is the throne room of God a place of reverence, it’s always a place of refuge. So when everything else in life seems to be shifting, or breaking and shaking apart, there’s a place that is always stable, safe, and constant. When we draw near to God in worship, and approach His throne, we tap into that. It’s a very re-assuring place, where we’re reminded that there’s a God on His throne, and even when we don’t understand everything, we can trust it to Him. Matt Redman
- We have a friend and protector, from whom, if we do not ourselves depart from Him, nor power nor spirit can separate us. In His strength let us proceed on our journey, through the storms, and troubles, and dangers of the world. However they may rage and swell, though the mountains shake at the tempests, our rock will not be moved: we have one friend who will never forsake us; one refuge, where we may rest in peace and stand in our lot at the end of the days. That same is He who liveth, and was dead; who is alive forevermore; and hath the keys of hell and of death. Reginald Heber
- Like all good metaphors, the idea of God as a refuge is also an invitation to respond. The emphasis on refuge is designed to encourage the reader actively to seek Yahweh as such — to choose him as their source of protection and sustenance. Although he objectively is a refuge, the individual worshipper must choose to allow him to be so in their daily life. And so Brueggemann is not wrong to focus on the refuge metaphor connoting the intimacy of personal faith. The metaphor is made “efficacious” by trusting God. God is a refuge; but He also becomes our refuge when we put our trust in him. Melinda Cousins

- The desire for guidance, love, and support prompts men to form the social or moral conception of God. This is the God of Providence, who protects, disposes, rewards, and punishes; the God who, according to the limits of the believer’s outlook, loves and cherishes the life of the tribe or of the human race, or even of life itself; the comforter in sorrow and unsatisfied longing; he who preserves the souls of the dead. - Two ideas are psychologically deep-rooted in man: self-protection and self-preservation. For self-protection man has created God, on whom he depends for his own protection, safety and security, just as a child depends on its parent. Hence he clings to them deeply and fanatically. Walpola Rahula
