The boat
The great Chinese Taoist teacher Chuang Tzu used to tell his students this parable: Suppose that a man is traveling in a boat and suddenly sees another boat coming at him. Reacting with irritation and anger, he shouts loudly and gesticulates madly to the helmsman of the boat to change his course. But then the boat comes closer, and he sees that there is no one in it. His anger dissipates, and he himself now steers clear of the empty boat. What happens, asks Chuang Tzu, if we approach others from an emptiness of the heart, without preconceived ideas?
