… a projection of our thoughts, feelings, and desires
- When you do the work, you see who you are by seeing who you think other people are. Eventually you come to see that everything outside you is a reflection of your own thinking. You are the storyteller, the projector of all stories, and the world is the projected image of your thoughts. Byron Katie
- The world that we perceive is a reflection of our own states of mind and reveals our own level of consciousness. The world is little more than a Rorschach blot in which we see our own desire systems projected. We see what we want to see. Prem Prakash
- The world we see merely reflects our own internal frame of reference – the dominant ideas, wishes and emotions in our minds. We look inside first, decide the kind of world we want to see and then project that world outside, making it the truth as we see it. We make it true by our interpretations of what it is we are seeing. A Course in Miracles

All we perceive is a projection
- All perception is projection. Tara

We project our opinions, beliefs and values onto others, believing (often falsely) that they think the same way we do
- False-consensus effect or false-consensus bias is a cognitive bias whereby a person tends to overestimate how many people agree with him or her. There is a tendency for people to assume that their own opinions, beliefs, preferences, values and habits are “normal” and that others also think the same way that they do. This cognitive bias tends to lead to the perception of a consensus that does not exist, a “false consensus”. This false consensus is significant because it increases self-esteem. The need to be “normal” and fit in with other people is underlined by a desire to conform and be liked by others in a social environment. Wikipedia

As a defence mechanism, we often project our unacceptable feelings and qualities onto others
- Sigmund Freud considered that in projection thoughts, motivations, desires, and feelings that cannot be accepted as one’s own are dealt with by being placed in the outside world and attributed to someone else. Wikipedia
- An unclarified mind represses its own faults and then projects them on all opponents. R. Collier
- Projection is a defence mechanism that involves taking our own unacceptable qualities or feelings and ascribing them to other people. For example, if you have a strong dislike for someone, you might instead believe that he or she does not like you. Projection works by allowing the expression of the desire or impulse, but in a way that the ego cannot recognize, therefore reducing anxiety. Kendra Cherry
- According to the model of defensive projection, people try to suppress thoughts of their undesirable traits, and these efforts make those trait categories highly accessible—so that they are then used all the more often when forming impressions of others. (Newman, Duff, and Baumeister, 1997)
- Projection is a form of defence in which unwanted feelings are displaced onto another person, where they then appear as a threat from the external world. A common form of projection occurs when an individual, threatened by his own angry feelings, accuses another of harbouring hostile thoughts. Encyclopaedia Britanica
- Many of the faults you see in others, dear reader, are your own nature reflected in them. Rumi
- The people in the world whom we hate, judge, or have strong negative reactions toward are direct representations of our disowned selves. Conversely, the people in the world whom we overvalue emotionally are also direct representations of our disowned selves. Hal & Sidra Stone
- The shadow disguises itself in our projections, when we react intensely to a trait in others that we fail to see in ourselves. Connie Zweig
- …it is important to understand, not intellectually but actually in your daily life, how you have built images about your wife, your husband, your neighbor, your child, your country, your leaders, your politicians, your gods–you have nothing but images. The images create the space between you and what you observe and in that space there is conflict, so what we are going to find out now together is whether it is possible to be free of the space we create, not only outside ourselves but in ourselves, the space which divides people in all their relationships… Jiddu Krishnamurti
- Defence mechanisms
.
Here are some examples of this
- Thoughts of infidelity to a partner may be unconsciously projected in self-defence onto the partner in question, so that the guilt attached to the thoughts can be turned to blame instead. Wikipedia
- A bully may project his/her own feelings of vulnerability onto the victim. Wikipedia

Our judgements of another are often a projection of our own unconsciousness onto another person
- Judgement is either to confuse someone’s unconscious behavior with who they are or to project your own unconsciousness onto another person and mistake that for who they are. Eckhart Tolle
.
Use your negative judgements of others to help you recognise the repressed aspects of your own nature
- What I discovered was my potential to act like the people I had been most harshly judging. It became clear that I had to be on the lookout for the traits that most bothered me in others. Debbie Ford
- The particular egoic patterns that you react to most strongly in others and misperceive as their identity tend to be the same patterns that are also in you, but that you are unable or unwilling to detect within yourself. Eckhart Tolle
- Ask someone to give a description of the personality type which he finds most despicable, most unbearable and hateful, and most impossible to get along with, and he will produce a description of his own repressed characteristics. These very qualities are so unacceptable to him precisely because they represent his own repressed side; only that which we cannot accept within ourselves do we find impossible to live with in others. Edward Whitmont
- If you hate a person, you hate something in him that is part of yourself. What isn’t part of ourselves doesn’t disturb us. Hermann Hesse
- Difficult and unpleasant as it may be to accept, we often feel most hostile to those who remind us of aspects of ourselves that we prefer not to see. Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz
- I realized that I only judged people when they displayed a quality I could not accept in myself. If someone was a show- off, I no longer judged them because I knew that I, too, was a show-off. Only when I had completely convinced myself that I was not capable of a certain behavior would I get upset and point my finger at the other person. When we are blaming others, we are only denying an aspect of ourselves. Debbie Ford
- When the defects of others are perceived with so much clarity, it is because one possesses them oneself. Jules Renard
- We discover in others what others hide from us, and we recognize in others what we hide from ourselves. Marquis de Vauvenargues

- Our parents, our children, our spouses, and our friends will continue to press every button we have, until we realize what it is that we don’t want to know about ourselves, yet. They will point us to our freedom every time. Byron Katie
- When you have an emotional reaction to what you see, you are judging. That is your signal that you have an issue inside of yourself – with yourself – not with the other person. If you react to evil, look inside yourself for the very thing that so agitates you, and you will find it. If it were not there, you will simply discern, act appropriately, and move on. Gary Zukav
.
Identify what you dislike in another and ask, “How too am I that?”
- Think for a moment of someone you actively dislike. What quality in that person do you find most objectionable? Now ask yourself, ‘How am I that?’ Jim Loehr
- What we find most annoying in others is really an indicator of what we find (unconsciously) most annoying in ourselves. The fastest way to identify our shadow? Take a look at what bothers you in other people. Identify what it is you’re finding frustrating in the other person. Ask yourself, “How am I that?” And see how this is really just an issue YOU need to address in your life! Brian Johnson
.
Becoming aware of our own shadow makes you less likely to negatively project it onto others
- The most enlightened people in the world embrace their full potential of light and dark. When you’re with people who recognize and own their negative qualities, you never feel judged by them. It’s only when people see good and bad, right and wrong, as qualities outside themselves that judgments occur. Deepak Chopra
- Unless you learn to face your own shadows, you will continue to see them in others, because the world outside is only a reflection of the world inside you.
- The best political, social and spiritual work we can do is to withdraw the projection of our shadow onto others. Carl Jung

Change the projector, not the projection |
.
The world is a projection of your mind and does not need to be changed, judged or controlled
- With humility comes the willingness to stop trying to control or change other people or life situations or events ostensibly ‘for their own good’. To be a committed spiritual seeker, it is necessary to relinquish the desire to be ‘right’ or of imaginary value to society. In fact, nobody’s ego or belief systems are of any value to society at all. The world is neither good nor bad nor defective, nor is it in need of help or modification because its appearance is only a projection of one’s own mind. No such world exists. David R. Hawkins
.
Much of the world we see is a projection of our own illusions, and doesn’t even exist
- It was at this point in my life that I began to realize my mind was nothing but a projection machine. More often than not, what I was thinking had no basis in reality. Kenny Johnson
- In Reality, everything is automatically manifesting the inherent destiny of its essence; it doesn’t need any external help to do this. With humility, one can relinquish the ego’s self-appointed role as savior of the world and surrender it straight to God. The world that the ego pictures is a projection of its own illusions and arbitrary positionalities. No such world exists. David R. Hawkins

To change your life, it’s usually far more effective to change the projector (your mind) than than the screen (the external world)
- Since the beginning of time, people have been trying to change the world so that they can be happy. This hasn’t ever worked, because it approaches the problem backward. What The Work gives us is a way to change the projector—mind—rather than the projected. It’s like when there’s a piece of lint on a projector’s lens. We think there’s a flaw on the screen, and we try to change this person and that person, whomever the flaw appears on next. But it’s futile to try to change the projected images. Once we realize where the lint is, we can clear the lens itself. This is the end of suffering, and the beginning of a little joy in paradise. Byron Katie
- As long as we’re at war with our own minds, we are at war with the world and with the whole human race. Because as long as we want to get rid of our thoughts, anyone that we meet is likely to become an enemy. There is only one mind, and people are going to tell us what we haven’t dealt with yet in their own thinking. You’re fat. You’re stupid. You’re not good enough.’ If you are an enemy to your own mind, other people have to become enemies too, sooner or later. Until you understand, until you can love the thoughts that appear in your mind, then you can love the rest of us. You work with the projector-the mind – not the projected world. I can’t really love you until I question the mind that thinks it sees you outside itself . . . Byron Katie

Don’t take anything personally for what others do is a projection of their own reality and has little to do with you
- Don’t Take Anything Personally. Nothings others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering. Don Miguel Ruiz
- Don’t take other people’s negativity personally. Most negative people behave negatively not just to you, but to everyone they interact with. What they say and do is a projection of their own reality – their own attitude. Even when a situation seems personal – even if someone insults you directly – it oftentimes has nothing to do with you. Remember, what others say and do, and the opinions they have, are based entirely on their own self- reflection. Marc and Angel Chernoff
- I’ve learned to see that someone’s criticism (or praise) is just a projection of what’s going on with them, so I’m less attached to other people’s opinions of me. Brian Johnson
- Compliments and criticism are all ultimately based on some form of projection. Billy Corgan

Instead of projecting your thoughts and story onto another, listen with alert presence
- Instead of projecting your own autobiography and assuming thoughts, feelings, motives, and interpretation, you’re dealing with the reality inside another person’s head and heart. You’re focused on receiving the deep communication from another human soul. Stephen Covey

Even your image of God is often a projection of your own attitudes and feelings toward yourself
- The traditional God is a patriarchal, controlling authority figure, an often angry man who you should live in fear of, as the Old Testament suggests. This God is a projection of the human mind. Eckhart Tolle
- We have made up a God in our image. Because we are angry and judgmental, we have projected those characteristics onto Him. But God remains who He is and always will be: He is the energy, the thought of unconditional love. He cannot think with anger or judgment. He is mercy and compassion and total acceptance. Marianne Williamson
- We unwittingly project onto God our own attitudes and feelings toward ourselves… But we cannot assume that He feels about us the way we feel about ourselves — unless we love ourselves compassionately, intensely, and freely. Brennan Manning

- Everyone wants happiness; nobody wants to suffer. Many problems around us are a mental projection of certain negative or unpleasant things.
