What is self-forgiveness? |
.
Self-forgiveness is letting go of self-anger
.
You can ask forgiveness of others, but in the end the real forgiveness is in one’s own self
- You can ask forgiveness of others, but in the end the real forgiveness is in one’s own self. I think that young men and women are so caught by the way they see themselves. Now mind you. When a larger society sees them as unattractive, as threats, as too black or too white or too poor or too fat or too thin or too sexual or too asexual, that’s rough. But you can overcome that. The real difficulty is to overcome how you think about yourself. If we don’t have that we never grow, we never learn, and sure as hell we should never teach. Maya Angelou
- I have learned, that the person I have to ask for forgiveness from the most is: myself. JoyBell C.

Forgiving yourself allows you to let go of the heavy burden of guilt
- Guilt can quickly turn into regret and self-pity. The only way out is through acceptance and forgiveness.
- Guilt is the most useless of all erroneous behaviors. It is by far the greatest waste of emotional energy. Why? Because, by definition, you are feeling immobilized in the present over something that has already taken place, and no amount of guilt can ever change history. Wayne Dyer
- Guilt is a useless feeling. It’s never enough to make you change direction–only enough to make you useless. Daniel Nayeri
- Guilt is a destructive and ultimately pointless emotion. Lynn Crilly

.
Forgive yourself every day
- I have learned, that the person I have to ask for forgiveness from the most is: myself. You must love yourself. You have to forgive yourself, everyday, whenever you remember a shortcoming, a flaw, you have to tell yourself “That’s just fine”. You have to forgive yourself so much, until you don’t even see those things anymore. Because that’s what love is like. C. JoyBell C.

Recognise you did the best you could with where you were at

- You forgive by realizing that nobody can act beyond their level of consciousness. Eckhart Tolle
- Do your best
.
Forgive yourself for your past mistakes and move on …
- The person who is to succeed will never let his mind dwell on past mistakes. He will forgive the past in his life and in the lives of other people. If he makes a mistake he will at once forgive it. Ernest Holmes
- I don’t know if I continue, even today, always liking myself. But what I learned to do many years ago was to forgive myself. It is very important for every human being to forgive herself or himself because if you live, you will make mistakes- it is inevitable. But once you do and you see the mistake, then you forgive yourself and say, ‘Well, if I’d known better I’d have done better,’ that’s all. So you say to people who you think you may have injured, ‘I’m sorry,’ and then you say to yourself, ‘I’m sorry.’ If we all hold on to the mistake, we can’t see our own glory in the mirror because we have the mistake between our faces and the mirror; we can’t see what we’re capable of being. Maya Angelou
- Your development towards wisdom is a process of experimentation, trial and error, so it’s inevitable things will not always go to plan or turn out how you’d want. Compassion is the remedy for harsh judgement – of ourselves and others. Forgiveness is not only divine – it’s also ‘the act of erasing an emotional debt’. Behaving ethically, with integrity, and with humour – especially the ability to laugh at yourself and your own mishaps – are central to the perspective that ‘mistakes’ are simply lessons we must learn. Cherie Carter- Scott

… realising that mistakes are opportunities for learning rather than a personal failure
- It is important that we forgive ourselves for making mistakes. We need to learn from our errors and move on. Steve Maraboli
- Forgive Yourself. We tend to be our own worst critics which makes self-forgiveness something that is easier said than done. It involves an attitude of openness, self- acceptance, letting go of anger, and a belief in one’s own worth and goodness. Self- forgiveness is not abdicating responsibility. It is seeing mistakes as opportunities for learning rather than as personal failure. Tracy Ochester

.
Forgive yourself for things you didn’t do
- It’s not just other people we need to forgive. We also need to forgive ourselves. For all the things we didn’t do. All the things we should have done. Mitch Albom
- Regret
.
Forgive yourself even if others haven’t yet
- Don’t allow your self-forgiveness to be contingent upon somebody else’s readiness or willingness to forgive you. They may get something out of holding on to anger that they aren’t ready to let go of. They may be too frightened or wounded to let go of their anger. Feeling angry may be an important part of their healing process at this time. Allow others to be where they are. Respect their right to feel the way they feel. Robin Casarjian
.
Forgive yourself by forgiving others
- It’s toughest to forgive ourselves, so it’s best probably to start with other people. It’s almost like peeling an onion. Layer by layer, forgiving others, you really do get to the point where you can forgive yourself. Patty Duke
.
If God forgives you, then surely you should to
- I think that if God forgives us we must forgive ourselves. Otherwise, it is almost like setting up ourselves as a higher tribunal than Him. C. S. Lewis
- God
.
We’re always harder on ourselves than anybody else
- Forgive many things in others; nothing in yourself. Ausonius
- The acceptance of oneself is the essence of the whole moral problem and the epitome of a whole outlook on life. That I feed the hungry, that I forgive an insult, that I love my enemy in the name of Christ — all these are undoubtedly great virtues. What I do unto the least of my brethren, that I do unto Christ. But what if I should discover that the least among them all, the poorest of all the beggars, the most impudent of all the offenders, the very enemy himself — that these are within me, and that I myself stand in need of the alms of my own kindness — that I myself am the enemy who must be loved — what then? As a rule, the Christian’s attitude is then reversed; there is no longer any question of love or long-suffering; we say to the brother within us “Raca,” and condemn and rage against ourselves. We hide it from the world; we refuse to admit ever having met this least among the lowly in ourselves. C.Carl Jung
.
Let yourself be forgiven by others
- Don’t cling to your self-righteous suffering, let it go. . . . Nothing is too good to be true, let yourself be forgiven. To the degree you insist that you must suffer, you insist on the suffering of others as well. Stephen Levine
- Letting ourselves be forgiven is one of the most difficult healings we will undertake. And one of the most fruitful. Stephen Levine
.
Realise that you are not a bad person
- You can do something wrong while still being a good person. A lot of guilt or shame can make you feel like there is something wrong with you. Realize, right now, that there is a very big difference between doing a bad thing and being a bad person. Even when you do something that you regret, you most likely had a valid reason for doing it at the time (even if that reason doesn’t make rational sense). Michael Davidson

Rick Hanson’s steps to forgiving yourself |
- Acknowledge what you feel you did wrong including what happened, what was in your mind at the time, the relevant context and history and the results for yourself and others.
- Notice any facts that are hard to face — like the look in a child’s eyes when you yelled at her — and be especially open to them; they’re the ones that are keeping you stuck. It is always the truth that sets us free.
- Sort what happened into three piles: moral faults, unskillfulness and everything else. Moral faults deserve proportionate guilt, remorse or shame, but unskillfulness calls for correction, no more.
- In an honest way, take responsibility for your moral fault(s) and unskillfulness. Say in your mind or out loud (or write): I am responsible for ______ , _______ and _______ . Let yourself feel it. Then add to yourself: But I am not responsible for ______ , _______ and _______ . For example, you are not responsible for the misinterpretations or over-reactions of others. Let the relief of what you are not responsible for sink in.
- Acknowledge what you have already done to learn from this experience, and to repair things and make amends. Let this sink in. Appreciate yourself.
- Next, decide what, if anything, remains to be done — inside your own heart or out there in the world — and then do it. Let it sink in that you’re doing it, and appreciate yourself for this too.
- And now actively forgive yourself. Say in your mind, out loud, in writing or to others statements like: I forgive myself for ______ , _______ and _______ . I have taken responsibility and done what I could to make things better.
- You may need to go through one or more of the steps above again and again to truly forgive yourself, and that’s alright. Allow the experience of being forgiven to take some time to sink in. Help it sink in by opening up to it in your body and heart.
