• The moment you die and the way that you die has been predetermined on your contract. There may also be several other opportunities to leave the earth plane during the course of your life, which present themselves as ‘exit points’. At these times, you’ll get the chance to either stay or go. Once you fully accept that this pact has been made at a higher level, it will often release the fear and pain associated with the crossing. For example, if you have recognized a contract around poverty consciousness, that is no longer serving your highest purpose you can say the following: “I am Master of my own creation. I acknowledge that I feel fear about not having enough money and that it no longer serves my spiritual path. With the power of my higher self, I release this fear back to the Universe for the greatest good, to be transformed into the highest form of Divine Love and Light.” Hayden Crawford
• I know the word “contract” can be a bit intimidating, (maybe this is why some people call them agreements? I dunno) but for me, because I also do some legal writing, I know that there is always wiggle room in contracts. There can be clauses and addendums, to allow for human free will, and when circumstances change. You can sometimes “get out” of a contract. Roles and goals can be altered too. Our spirit selves are always working behind the scenes, and tweaking soul contracts is something they do! Plato spoke about soul contracts

• I go into the background for my beliefs in much greater detail in “Sacred Contracts”, but one fascinating parallel occurs in the writings of Plato. In the tenth and final book of his great work The Republic, Plato relates the Myth of Er. In brief, the story concerns a Greek soldier named Er who is left for dead on the battlefield. Twelve days later he awakens on his own funeral pyre, and later tells a remarkable tale of what he observed while he was suspended between life and death. Er found himself in a kind of way station between heaven and earth where souls were passing from one plane to the other. Dead souls were waiting to be judged and assigned to their reward or punishment, while other souls prepared for their journey to earth. Some were old souls returning for another go-round; others were freshly minted and awaiting their first life on Earth. At one point the waiting souls are presented with many possible life scenarios, and are advised to choose from these “samples of lives.” Plato informs us that “there were many more lives than the souls present, and they were of all sorts. There were lives of every animal and of man in every condition,” including tyrants. Before entering life on the Earth plane, however, the souls were led to the plain of Forgetfulness, a barren waste with no vegetation, where they were required to drink from the river of Unmindfulness. They then promptly forgot everything that had just happened to them. The reason should be obvious: if you know in advance exactly what’s going to happen in your life, you would have great difficulty making decisions or taking actions that are intended to teach you something, often through painful experiences. You might naturally be reluctant to begin a relationship with someone who you knew would hurt you, even though you needed to learn a valuable lesson from that person. Whether we take this myth literally or simply as a teaching device of Plato’s, we can use it to gain a higher perspective on our life. Carolyn Myss

A belief in soul contracts holds several benefits

• If you think of your life’s direction as something to which you have agreed, then what formerly seemed like arbitrary or even absurd conditions can be seen in another light. They are part of the roadmap that you’ve agreed to follow. Each event, each person of any significance whom you encounter, has an agreed-on role in your learning experience. Sometimes the learning is difficult because you don’t always surrender to the situation. It may take time for you to see the reasons for it. But the sooner you do, the less painful it becomes. In time, you can learn to accept each event as it happens without struggling against it and prolonging your psychic — and physical — suffering. To have a serious illness or injury is difficult enough; seeing it as a punishment or the cruel caprice of fate only makes it harder to bear. The resulting stress will probably also make it worse, and you will take longer to heal or recover. Naturally, you can’t be expected to see everything immediately, or in advance. But if you have a way of looking at the symbolic meaning of your experiences, you will be better prepared to accept the inevitable changes to your life. Fighting change builds up emotional scar tissue. Surrendering to divine will allows you to accept the changes, and get on with your life. Caroline Myss
• There is a lot to explore when it comes to soul contracts, but the bottom line is: most things that you experience in this lifetime (maybe even everything) are outlined in your soul contracts. You are here in Earth School to learn, to grow, and to evolve. And yes, sometimes that’s hella painful. And sometimes it’s positively breathtaking. The major players in your life all signed agreements with you before coming here. To me, this offers a perspective that allows me to breathe and relax. It allows me to have more compassion for those in my life, and for myself. It allows me to accept things that happen with an attitude of curiosity. And ultimately, it allows me to forgive easier. It gives us an opportunity to consider how we might change things the next time around. In turn, this can help us to deal with the people in our lives in the moment. What is the relationship between soul contracts and karma?

• There is some overlap between the idea of a soul contract and a karmic bond, but the essence is a little bit different. To me, soul contracts are a bit more loose and playful, when two souls decide to try out something new! These contracts are signed because we freely choose to hang out together, and experience different roles in each others’ lives. On the other hand, karmic bonds are more urgent and a bit stricter. Karmic bonds form according to Universal law, bringing people together to fulfill obligations, repay favors, repay debts, or make amends for past choices. In my experience, karmic bonds can be very short-lived, unlike soul contracts which can play out over many years. For example, people involved in a car accident may be tied karmically, but not necessarily have a soul contract. And flip side, a committed partner of ten years may not involve any karmic bonds at all.  Melani Schweder
• There’s also karma that you have to balance back out again, so there are certain karmic things that will be balanced back out in your next incarnation. Not as a punishment, but it’s simply a way to experience all sides of things. A common example: if you were the victim this time, you might be the abuser next time because you need to balance out that experience. This isn’t to diminish what you’re experiencing in this life because we were meant to experience it from a human perspective here. Maria Hill
• The agreements you make are a co-creative pact between yourself and one or more souls. It is your free-will to do so. However, once they’re in motion, you’re then creating a karmic obligation. If you have had a soul group member fulfil a role that has created a drama between you, it must be resolved to complete the contract. The timeframe you have to do this is entirely of your own choosing. The quality of the experience that resolves a contract is far more important than the speed at which it’s done. You can sit on contracts for several thousand years before the right circumstances present themselves. So while the law of karma does dictate you fulfil all agreements, you still have a free-will choice in how that will play out. Sam Boomer
• Unlike more rigid karmic connections, people connected through soul agreements choose to hang out together for a variety of reasons. Imagine a conversation between pre-incarnated soul buddies: “Wow, it would be cool if next time around we could arrange to be siblings, business partners, or lovers.” Karmic relationships tend to have an urgent energy to them, bringing individuals together to return a favor, repay a debt, work out their differences, or make amends for past misdeeds. At times, we may be able to unlock or remember our soul contract

• One of the hardest parts of coming to Earth School, is that our memories are wiped (or more likely, locked away in the depths of our subconscious) when we’re born. Thus, the whole underlying theme of this human experience is REMEMBERING. Remembering who we are. Remembering our spiritual truth. • Is there a way I can find out what my soul contract specifically is or like the main theme of it? You can ask your higher self. Also, here’s the difficult part: sometimes we’re not supposed to know our entire soul contract. You can ask your higher self or your spirit guides for the most relevant piece of your contract to be revealed that would be helpful to you. • Look at your history and notice where you’ve spent your time and given your energy and attention — notice what you’ve gone out of your way to access and investigate. • There is some degree of formalized religious backdrop to the Soul Contract theory. I see it as an interesting mixture of reincarnation, Dharma, Karma. a strong Christian leaning and a divine presence, with whom we enter into some sort of agreement.
