Synchronicity (quotes)

What is synchronicity?

Synchronicity is the simultaneous occurrence of events seemingly beyond chance which appear significantly related

  • Synchronicity: The simultaneous occurrence of events which appear significantly related but have no discernible causal connection.  Oxford Dictionary
  • Synchronicity: The happening by chance of two or more related or similar events at the same time.  Cambridge Dictionary
  • Synchronicity: Coincidence in time; contemporaneousness; simultaneousness.
  • Synchronicity takes the coincidence of events in space and time as meaning something more than mere chance, namely, a peculiar interdependence of objective events among themselves as well as with the subjective (psychic) states of the observer or observers. Carl Jung
  • Synchronicity: The coincidental occurrence of events and especially psychic events (as similar thoughts in widely separated persons or a mental image of an unexpected event before it happens) that seem related but are not explained by conventional mechanisms of causality. Merriam Webster
  • Synchronicity – the sense of significance beyond chance. Elisabeth Y. Fitzhugh
  • Life is God’s dreamMeaningDestiny,  SerendipityDivine order

In other words, synchronicity is about meaningful co-incidences happening in our lives…

  • Synchronicity: A meaningful coincidence of two or more events where something other than the probability of chance is involved. Carl Jung
  • ..means a ‘meaningful coincidence’ of outer and inner events that are not themselves causally connected. The emphasis lies on the word ‘meaningful’. Marie-Louise von Franz
  • Synchronistic events offer us perceptions that may be useful in our psychological and spiritual growth and may reveal to us, through intuitive knowledge, that our lives have meaning. Jean Shinoda Bolen
  • According to Jung, synchronicity is an unpredictable moment of meaningful coincidence. Megan McCafferty

… with the emphasis on the word “meaningful”

  • Synchronicity means a ‘meaningful coincidence’ of outer and inner events that are not themselves causally connected. The emphasis lies on the word ‘meaningful’. Marie-Louise von Franz
  • On the surface, things may seem random and without consequence. But I sense a hidden meaning, which expresses itself symbolically in the flow of events. Strange synchronicities punctuate my adventures. Patterns emerge suggestive of a secret significance. Tim Freke
  • Synchronicity is a term used by Carl Jung to describe coincidences that are related by meaningfulness rather than by cause and effect. David Richo
  • At various points in our lives, or on a quest, and for reasons that often remain obscure, we are driven to make decisions which prove with hindsight to be loaded with meaning. Swami Satchidananda
  • It all depends on how we look at things, and not on how they are themselves. Carl Jung
  • When a synchronicity happens it’s suddenly obvious there is some secret pattern underlying seemingly random events. Tim Freke
  • Synchronicities happen so often, sometimes I take them for granted. And to me this suggests that life is full of implicit meaning. It may be impossible to say what the meaning is, but meaning is obvious everywhere. Tim Freke
  • Meaning

Synchronicity is a term first introduced by Carl Jung

  • The problem of synchronicity has puzzled me for a long time, ever since the middle twenties, when I was investigating the phenomena of the collective unconscious and kept on coming across connections which I simply could not explain as chance groupings or “runs.” What I found were “coincidences” which were connected so meaningfully that their “chance” concurrence would represent a degree of improbability that would have to be expressed by an astronomical figure. Carl Jung
  • We often dream about people from whom we receive a letter by the next post. I have ascertained on several occasions that at the moment when the dream occurred the letter was already lying in the post-office of the addressee. Carl Jung
  • Jung was transfixed by the idea that life was not a series of random events but rather an expression of a deeper order. This deeper order led to the insights that a person was both embedded in an orderly framework and was the focus of that orderly framework and that the realisation of this was more than just an intellectual exercise, but also had elements of a spiritual awakening. From the religious perspective, synchronicity shares similar characteristics of an “intervention of grace”. Jung also believed that in a person’s life, synchronicity served a role similar to that of dreams, with the purpose of shifting a person’s egocentric conscious thinking to greater wholeness. The rewards of synchronicity

Synchronicity has important roles to play

  • A synchronicity can serve as guidance, warning, affirmation, creative inspiration, confirmation that we’re on the right track. It can be evidence of individuation and psychological growth. Or it can simply serve to attune our awareness that beneath the surface of daily life there’s an underlying reality and unity that may not be immediately obvious. All synchronicities, even the ones that caution us, have a mysterious quality. Trish and Rob MacGregor

Synchronicity is the universe leading us forward, bringing us the right information at the right time

  • As we blossom or awaken, we begin to notice there is a force in the world that seems to be operating and leading us into a certain destiny. And it’s very much a kind of detective effort on our own part to figure out what these things mean. The synchronicity is essentially a meaningful coincidence that brings us information at just the right time. While leading us forward, it also feels very inspiring and destined in a way. It feels like we’re on a path of unfolding in our own personal evolution. James Redfield
  • In every moment, the Universe is whispering to you. You’re constantly surrounded by signs, coincidences, and synchronicities, all aimed at propelling you in the direction of your destiny. Denise Linn
  • Synchronicity is choreographed by a great, pervasive intelligence that lies at the heart of nature, and is manifest in each of us through intuitive knowledge. Deepak Chopra

Synchronicity brings about “chance” meetings between you and others – and between you and events

  • The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed. Carl Jung
  • There is an odd synchronicity in the way parallel lives veer to touch one another, change direction, and then come close again and again until they connect and hold for whatever it was that fate intended to happen. Ann Rule
  • Synchronicities express themselves through chance meetings and natural events as well as in dreams and supernatural episodes. Daniel Pinchbeck
  • …really important meetings are planned by the souls long before the bodies see each other. Generally, speaking, these meetings occur when we reach a limit, when we need to die and be reborn emotionally. These meetings are waiting for us, but more often than not, we avoid them happening. If we are desperate, though, if we have nothing to lose, or if we are full of enthusiasm for life, then the unknown reveals itself, and our universe changes direction.   Paulo Coelho

Synchronicity allows you to collaborate in the design of your destiny

  • Every experience of synchronicity is a daring invitation to let go of ego long enough to design a destiny in accord with the purposes of love. David Richo
  • This is called synchronicity – a state in which you almost feel as if you are in a collaborative arrangement with fate. Wayne Dyer
  • We do not create our destiny; we participate in its unfolding. Synchronicity works as a catalyst toward the working out of that destiny. David Richo
  • Synchronicity is an inexplicable and profoundly meaningful coincidence that stirs the soul and offers a glimpse of one’s destiny. Phil Cousineau
  • As we blossom or awaken, we begin to notice there is a force in the world that seems to be operating and leading us into a certain destiny. James Redfield
  • God reveals your destiny through synchronicity. Rabia Noorstani
  • Synchronicities by their very nature demand our active participation, as they are not something we can just passively watch and remain unaffected by… Synchronicities inherent revelatory nature is ultimately offering us the realization that we are playing an active, participatory and hence, co-creative role in the unfoldment of the universe.  Paul Levy

Synchronicity provides a glimpse of a benevolent universe

  • Synchronicity and coincidences are ways the Divine winks at you to show you that you are loved and cared for. Lorraine Cohen
  • To experience a synchronistic event is to necessarily be changed at our core. No one could have convinced Jung’s patient that her synchronistic experience should be dismissed as a mere coincidence, as she had an inner knowing of its meaningfulness due to how it transformed her. She no longer lived in a dis-enchanted universe. Paul Levy

  • Synchronicity hints at the unified world behind the illusory veil of the material universe. Roger S. Jones
  • Synchronistic events provide an immediate religious experience as a direct encounter with the compensatory patterning of events in nature as a whole, both inwardly and outwardly. Carl Jung
  • Did blind chance know that there was light and what was its refraction, and fit the eyes of all creatures after the most curious manner to make use of it? These and other suchlike considerations, always have, and always will prevail with mankind, to believe that there is a Being who made all things, who has all things in his power, and who is therefore to be feared. Isaac Newton

Synchronicity provides a healthy dose of magic that stirs the soul and restores the spirit

Synchronicity is at the heart of creativity and inspiration

  • Creativity lies at the heart of synchronicity. When you’re looking for inspiration, remain alert for synchronicities. If you’re blocked in composing a song, writing a short story, or designing a poster, take a break, do something different, and watch what happens. Perhaps an e-mail from a friend inadvertently provides you with exactly what you need. Or a voice on the radio or television offers the perfect solution, even though the comment might be related to a different subject.  The message: If you are open to receiving inspiration, it can come to you from multiple sources and change your course in a refreshing way.  Trish and Rob MacGregor
  • Synchronicities, epiphanies, peak, and mystical experiences are all cases in which creativity breaks through the barriers of the self and allows awareness to flood through the whole domain of consciousness. It is the human mind operating, for a moment, in its true order and moving through orders of increasing subtlety, reaching past the source of mind and matter into creativity itself. David Peat

Synchronicity brings soulmates together

  • But are the twin souls destined to be together? Synchronicity is at work here to bring the two back together again. How entrancing to find the same magical alchemy still at work, just as it was at the first meeting – a recognition of a deep-rooted love so entrenched and so accepted, it could only have been forged in other lifetimes together. And probably that is what love at first sight is, recognition of an ancient love. Chimnese Davids
  • The moment you meet your soul mate is the ultimate synchronicity. Lucky is the person who recognizes in that very moment the intersection of the perfect time, perfect place and perfect person. Annette Vaillancourt Ph.D.
  • There is a tremendous desire and longing for love, but love needs great awareness. Only then can it reach its highest climax — and that highest climax IS marriage. It has nothing to do with law. It is a merging of two hearts into totality. It is the functioning of two persons in synchronicity — that is marriage. Rajneesh
  • I get so breathless, when you call my name, I’ve often wondered, do you feel the same? There’s a chemistry, energy, a synchronicity. When we’re all alone, So don’t tell me You can’t see.  Oh!  Corinne Bailey Rae (song lyrics)

Synchronicity can transform us

  • Imbued with a deeper fragrance of meaning, a synchronistic event is a revelation which contains within it a potency to insinuate itself into our very being and alter us from within. Synchronicities can transform us on a cellular level, as they are crystallizations into and out of the space of consciousness itself that have form-ulated themselves into our dimension as an expression of the part of us that is already awakened.  Paul Levy
  • Transformation

Synchronicity feels like grace and often comes with a strong emotional charge

  • Every time I have become aware of a synchronicity experience, I have had an accompanying feeling that some grace came along with it. Jean Shinoda Bolen
  • Synchronistic moments feel like grace, as they induce in us the feeling that we are right where we are supposed to be. Being numinous, synchronicities have a strong feeling component and emotional charge, which is both an expression of while simultaneously flowing into, influencing and altering the surrounding field of consciousness. Paul Levy
  • Grace

Synchronicity is at the heart of intuitive phenomena

  • The intellect has little to do on the road to discovery. There comes a leap in consciousness, call it Intuition or what you will, the solution comes to you and you don’t know how or why. Albert Einstein
  • Many meaningful coincidences are also examples of intuitive experiences. Imagine that you have a feeling you should turn at a particular intersection, even though it’s not the way you usually go to work. You later discover there was a huge accident on your usual route. The message: Synchronicity often takes the form of premonitions and if you honor your gut feelings you have a better chance of keeping yourself out of harm’s way.  Trish and Rob MacGregor

Ways to invite synchronicity into your life

Have the intention to create synchronicity in your life

  • The power of intention is a critical factor in all areas of life. Simply by intending to create synchronicity in your life, you can nurture that result. Deepak Chopra
  • Intention

Be open and ready for synchronicity

  • I’m at my strongest when I’m able to let go, when I suspend my beliefs as well as disbeliefs, and leave myself open to all possibilities. That also seems to be when I’m able to experience the most internal clarity and synchronicities. Anita Moorjani
  • All of us, whether or not we are warriors, have a cubic centimetre of chance that pops out in front of our eyes from time to time. The difference between an average man and a warrior is that the warrior is aware of this, and one of his tasks is to be alert, deliberately waiting, so that when his cubic centimetre pops out he has the necessary speed, the prowess, to pick it up. Carlos Castaneda
  • Synchronicity is an ever-present reality for those who have eyes to see. Carl Jung
  • I am open to the guidance of synchronicity, and do not let expectations hinder my path. The Dalai Lama
  • I always got a bit pissed off with those broadsheet sceptics who make their living being passionately angry about homeopathy, God, synchronicity or whatever, because it’s as if they can’t get past their emotions, and in their rage they become as faith-driven as the beliefs they criticise. I always said they give scientists a bad name. After all, science has to be about asking unthinkable questions, not closing down debate. Scarlett Thomas
  • Openness

Notice synchronicity when it happens

  • It is wrong, then, to chide the novel for being fascinated by mysterious coincidences . . . but it is right to chide man for being blind to such coincidences in his daily life. For he thereby deprives his life of a dimension of beauty. Milan Kundera

Recognise that there are no co-incidences, mistakes or accidents; that all events have meaning …

  • There are no accidents or coincidences in life – everything is synchronicity – because everything has a frequency. It’s simply the physics of life and the universe in action. Rhonda Byrne
  • Don’t dismiss the synchronicity of what is happening right now finding its way to your life at just this moment. There are no coincidences in the universe, only convergences of Will, Intent, and Experience. Neale Donald Walsch
  • There are no mistakes, no coincidences. All events are blessings given to us to learn from. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross
  • There is no such thing as chance; and what seem to us merest accident springs from the deepest source of destiny. Friedrich Schiller

… recognising that everything that happens in life is exactly what we need, when we need it

  • Look for something, find something else, and realize that what you’ve found is more suited to your needs than what you thought you were looking for. Lawrence Block
  • With synchronicity, all the resources we need are made available for us at the precise moment that is appropriate. The people who come into our lives are the ones we need at that moment in time. Everything is perfect. We only need to recognize this to tune into the flow. Everything happens for a reason and every experience is a learning experience. Alex Chua
  • God–the force, the energy, the design, the experience that some call Divinity–shows itself in your life in the way that is exactly and perfectly suited to the time, place, and situation at hand. You either call that experience “God” or you call it something else- – coincidence, synchronicity, “random event,” whatever. Yet what you call it does not change what it is–it merely indicates your belief system. Neale Donald Walsch

Follow a path that feeds your heart and soul; that makes you come alive

  • Something clicks inside of us and we realise we are contributing something. Suddenly we realise that our life really matters and we have found a life path that will feed more than just the brain and ego; it will feed our heart and our soul. An influx of energy bursts through us, and we enjoy a sense of satisfaction, spiritual accomplishment and self- esteem. These feelings gather together to create a kind of magical synchronicity. We begin going with that flow rather than paddling up stream. We begin to flow with an unseen force. Jamie Sams
  • When you stop existing and you start truly living, each moment of the day comes alive with the wonder and synchronicity. Steve Maraboli

Look for the message in events and find the gift in them, even if they appear negative at first

  • We must assume every event has significance and contains a message that pertains to our questions…this especially applies to what we used to call bad things…the challenge is to find the silver lining in every event, no matter how negative. James Redfield
  • Tragedies, joys, triumphs, failures, frustrations, crises — I assume that behind every development, small and large, is something else, something meaningful, a hidden gift, that if received with grace and used with reverence, invites me a step higher on my journey. Carol Lynn Pearson

Live your life in a state of alert awareness …

  • Meditation is the progressive quieting of our mind, until we reach the source of thought, which in wisdom traditions are the realm of our soul and spirit. In this domain of awareness there is infinite creativity, synchronicity, the power of intention, and freedom from limitations. Deepak Chopra
  • Setting a field for synchronicity is a matter of putting yourself in a particular state of mind. It is easy to think about synchronicity intellectually, but unless you enter the state of mind where your prayer-field will help, all you will do is glimpse the coincidences every once in a while. In some situations that is enough and you will be led forward for a time, but eventually you will lose your direction. The only way to establish a constant flow of synchronicity is to stay in a state where your prayer field keeps this flow moving toward you–a state of conscious alertness. James Redfield
  • If we make sure we stay in a state of conscious alertness for the next synchronicity, our minds stay on the positive and off our fear and doubt. James Redfield
  • Awareness

… in a state of higher consciousness

  • Living by synchronicity isn’t merely about getting messages. It is about growing the poetic consciousness that allows us to taste and touch what rhymes and resonates in the world we inhabit, and how the world-behind-the-world reveals itself by fluttering the veils of our consensual reality. Robert Moss

Allow life to unfold in its own way without struggling against it

  • Let-go means no competition, no struggle, no fight… just relaxing with existence, wherever it leads. Not trying to control your future, not trying to control consequences, but allowing them to happen… not even thinking about them. Let-go is in the present; consequences are tomorrow. And let-go is such a delightful experience, a total relaxation, a deep synchronicity with existence. Osho
  • It’s been said that coincidences are God’s way of remaining anonymous. Synchronicities are a sign of divinity. You breathe in deeply and say: ‘I don’t want anything. I’m going to let things happen’ Lana Del Rey
  • The Pranksters never talked about synchronicity by name, but they were more and more attuned to the principle. Obviously, according to this principle, man does not have free will. There is no use in his indulging in a lifelong competition to change the structure of the little environment he seems to be trapped in. But one could see the larger pattern and move with it – Go with the flow! – and accept it and rise above one’s immediate environment and even alter it by accepting the larger pattern and growing with it. Tom Wolfe

Awaken yourself spiritually …

  • According to Vedanta, there are only two symptoms of enlightenment, just two indications that a transformation is taking place within you toward a higher consciousness. The first symptom is that you stop worrying. Things don’t bother you anymore. You become light hearted and full of joy. The second symptom is that you encounter more and more meaningful coincidences in your life, more and more synchronicities. And this accelerates to the point where you actually experience the miraculous. Deepak Chopra

… taking steps towards positive change within

  • Synchronicity holds the promise that if we will change within, the patterns in our outer life will change also. Jean Shinoda Bolen
  • If you take a single step toward positive change, that divine energy will take a hundred steps toward you. New worlds and unbelievable possibilities will open up for you. The synchronicities that will begin appearing in your life will become a source of delight and amazement. Joan Z. Borysenko
  • Syncronistic meetings are like mirrors that reflect something of ourselves… Synchronicity holds the promise that if we want to change inside, the patterns of our external life will change as well. Jean Shinoda Bolen

Recognise that life as a kind of waking dream

  • I’m not just talking about analyzing symbols from a dream but bringing the dream into life. I’m talking about seeing the world around you as a waking dream where the symbols and synchronicities will speak to you if you pay attention. That’s why I call it active dreaming because it’s about getting active with all our dreams can be. Robert Moss
  • Synchronicities are expressions of the dreamlike nature of reality. Paul Levy
  • Synchronicities are both the vehicle through which and an expression of the fact that we are waking up to the dreamlike nature of the universe. Paul Levy
  • DreamingLife is God’s dream

Know the truth inside you

  • In the ’90s, we are all our own gurus, offering truth to each other. My message is that we all have a truth inside of us that we must tell. The synchronicity of life is all about becoming clear, knowing what that truth is, watching and taking advantage of the opportunity to express that truth, and knowing how to present it. James Redfield

Focus your mind on the conditions you want to produce in life …

  • Self-actualizing people never use their minds to think about what they don’t wish to attract. Their minds focus on the conditions they wish to produce — then the lucky break, the right people or circumstances, or the synchronistic opportunity somehow presents itself as a result of their contemplation. We all become what we think about, so it’s pretty important to pay attention to those thoughts. Wayne Dyer

… knowing what you want and committing to it

  • When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it. Paulo Coelho
  • The moment you are very clear about what you want to do, things happen. Life comes to your aid—a friend, a relation, a teacher, a grandmother, somebody helps you. But if you are afraid to try because your father may turn you out, then you are lost. Life never comes to the aid of those who merely yield to some demand out of fear. But if you say, ‘This is what I really want to do and I am going to pursue it,’ then you will find that something miraculous takes place. You may have to go hungry, struggle to get through, but you will be a worthwhile human being, not a mere copy, and that is the miracle of it. Jiddu Krishnamurti
  • The moment one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen events, meetings and material assistance which no one could have dreamed would have come their way. W.H. Murray
  • The universe runs on a fundamental and oh-so-wonderful principle… when you get really clear and honest about what you want, everything in the universe conspires to help you get it. Michael Neill

Not everyone believes in synchronicity

  • Yesterday they called it coincidence. Today it’s synchronicity. Tomorrow they’ll call it skill. Antero Alli
  • Synchronicity? Or bullshit? Megan McCafferty

Synchronicities come in clusters

  • Synchronicities come in ‘Clusters’. Clusters are one of the most curious aspects of synchronicity. They show up in the form of numbers, names, words, objects or symbols. It’s an example of like attracting like–over and over. Let’s say that you repeatedly see certain number–on your clock, your microwave, the radio dial, on TV, on bills. Maybe you Google the numbers to find out if they have a particular significance and find others are experiencing the same phenomenon. Clusters invariably grab our attention and often spur us to dig deeper into their meaning.  When we pay attention we’re better equipped to decipher what the ancients called “miracles of the gods.”  Trish and Rob MacGregor
  • As soon as we notice that certain types of event “like” to cluster together at certain times, we begin to understand the attitude of the Chinese, whose theories of medicine, philosophy, and even building are based on a “science” of meaningful coincidences. The classical Chinese texts did not ask what causes what, but rather what “likes” to occur with what. L. von Franz

Synchronicity and astrology

  • Astrology is one of the intuitive methods like the I Ching, geomantics, and other divinatory procedures. It is based upon the synchronicity principle, meaningful coincidence. … Astrology is a naively projected psychology in which the different attitudes and temperaments of man are represented as gods and identified with planets and zodiacal constellations. Carl Jung
  • Astrology is of particular interest to the psychologist, since it contains a sort of psychological experience which we call projected – this means that we find the psychological facts as it were in the constellations. This originally gave rise to the idea that these factors derive from the stars, whereas they are merely in a relation of synchronicity with them. I admit that this is a very curious fact which throws a peculiar light on the structure of the human mind. Carl Jung
